It is the reason to do researches on the new meaning of religious education. It is very important to protect heritage of Polish catechesis and search new ways in changed social and ecclesiastical situation. The article contains 6 sections: 1. Origins and characteristic of “General Directory for Catechesis” 2. Specifics of religious education at school 3. Towards integrated catechesis 4. Reform of Polish education system as a catechetistic challenge 5. Necessity of the new programme of catechesis and religion education 6. Necessity of co-ordination Church’s efforts The author calls attention to new situation after publishing “General Directory for Catechesis” in 1997. In this document relationship between catechesis and religious education is the relation of distinction and complementarity. It is a new point of view on Polish catechesis. The author attempts to prove that school practice shows that it is according to the new “Directory for Catechesis”. Conclusion of the article is: the Catholic Church in Poland will have to create new programmes for religious education at school and catechesis at parish.
