The symptoms of certain mental diseases may resemble demonic activity. The ability to distinguish the activity of an evil spirit from a mental disease is a basic skill. Amistake in this matter may have disastrous effects. Such a situation occurs when the exorcist performs the exorcism without a prior consultation with a psychiatrist. He presumes a priori the presence of demonic interference, which is not always the case.
