The first section provides a general characteristics of the Spanish church and its contribution to Christianity around the world. The second section presents the initial repressions in the nineteenth century, which intensified in the next century. This perspective makes it easier to understand brutal persecution of Christians during the civil war described in in the third section of the article. The fourth section outlines the reaction of the Church to the situation.
