Literackie i historyczno-krytyczne badania tego tekstu pozwalają na umiejscowienie jego powstania w okresie powygnaniowym, a pierwszych jego adresatów widzieć wśród mieszkańców perskiej prowincji Jehud. Z pomocą prorockiej formuły przedstawione jest najpierw orędzie Boga JHWH. Jego treścią jest historia Izraela, w której sam JHWH jest protagonistą. Ta historia odzwierciedla Bożą naturę. Jako taka miała być motywem do zaufania w teraźniejszości z myślą również o przyszłości. Dla mieszkańców judzkiej prowincji epoki powygnaniowej takie słowa pomagały w uświadomieniu własnej, religijnej i narodowej tożsamości. Budziły poczucie więzów krwi i wiary. Służyły budowaniu pomyślnej przyszłości w Ziemi Obiecanej.The text of Josh 24:1‒24 presents Joshua’s to the people and his conversation with them. Literary and historio-critical examination of this text allows us to date its origins to the post-exilic period and to see its first addressees as belonging to the inhabitants of the Persian province of Jehud. The message of God, YHWH, is first presented by means of the prophetic formula. Its content is the history of Israel, in which YHWH himself is the protagonist. This history mirrors the Divine nature. As such it was intended to be a motive for trust in the present, with thought of the future also. For the inhabitants of the province of Jehud, such words were a help in realising their own religious and national identity. They aroused a feeling of the bonds of blood and faith.
