It is a remarkable work as it constitutes a declaration of European ethos, all the virtues, shared values and spiritual heritage Europe should be proud of as it grants it a special place among all the different cultures and civilizations of the world. The conversation between Boethius and Lady Philosophy is a testimony of an in-depth reflection that leads him to realize that truth takes precedence over the avaricious attempts to save one’s career and the violence that is caused by envy as the real virtues are courage and consent to martyrdom. The dialogue may serve as a basis for the contemplation of philosophy and martyrdom or rather of the category of a philosopher and martyr. Boethius received a formidable education. He was a Roman consul, theologian, philosopher and Christian who was unjustly imprisoned and in the face of death yearned for consolation that Lady Philosophy, a lover of wisdom, offered him. The vision of philosophy in Boethius’ work is equal to the one presented by such great ancient philosophers as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Zeno, Plotinus and Philo: a spiritual activity, a spiritual path a persistent adherent of wisdom takes to start his journey that as a result will change his hierarchy of values in his vision and perception of the world. Philosophy is supposed to cause a personality metamorphosis, an inner transformation of its kind, a conversion, a change of one’s point of view. Philosophy is presented here as a messenger of the world of ideas that wishes to cure and convince the hero that its mission involves discovering a great spiritual vision. The role of philosophy is thus to give a man back the right perspective of vision, perception and, what follows, understanding of the matter. It is the perspective that makes us transcend worldliness, see ideas inside of us and contemplate our innerness. It is only ‘the philosophical light’ that can make it possible to rightly assess the value of things and one’s place in the world.polCC-BY-ND - Uznanie autorstwa - Bez utworów zależnychSeweryn BoecjuszDe consolatione philosophiaefilozofiafilozofowieduchowośćdialogmęczeństwopostać kobiety-filozofiidobrozłomądrośćBoethiusphilosophyphilosophersspiritualitydialoguemartyrdomfigure of woman-philosophygoodevilwisdomBoecjusz, czyli posłannictwo filozofii.
