Prawdziwy wizerunek Skargi

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to shed light on the problem that the scholars depicting the figure of Piotr Skarga has been dealing with for two centuries: the lack of a reliable image of this preacher. Although several paintings and graphic works come from the times around his life time, there is no certainty whether Skarga had posed for any of them. However, on the basis of the skull examination which was carried out in 1918, it is possible to specify a few characteristic features of his physiognomy which, interestingly enough, correspond to the known depictions of his person as well as to those less recognized ones that are presented in the article. The paper is part of wide-scale research conducted by the author into the iconography of Skarga and its transformations.
