Abstract

Prayers among the African peoples reflect the African spirituality and the study of those prayers contributes to the understanding of traditional African religions. The African peoples are acquainted with the prayers of adoration, thanksgiving, propitiation and request. African prayers have either individual or community character. African prayers are addressed to God, deities, Earth spiritis, clan protective spirits, spirits of the bush and of the ancestors. The content of the prayers comprise all the spheres of individual and community life as well as the needs of the African people. The foremost place in the prayers is taken by the matters of life, fertility, food, health and peace. The African peoples request the help of supranatural beings in definite problems of everyday life.
