Abstract

The medieval image of the world was geocentric. It was more theological than physical. The unity of God and the Cosmos was inscribed into this image and inspired the awe of the cosmic harmony and its hierarchical structure. There was a common belier th at the knowledge of the Cosmos leads to the knowledge of God. The medieval image of the world was very stable; it persisted till the Copemican revolution.
