    Soborowy dekret Unitatis redintegratio otworzył Kościół katolicki na dialog ekumeniczny z innymi wyznaniami chrześcijańskimi, wyznaczając jako jego cel pełną wspólnotę kościelną urzeczywistniającą się we wspólnym sprawowaniu Eucharystii. Jedną z podstawowych przeszkód na drodze realizacji tego celu była trwająca od czasów Reformacji kontrowersja z protestantami na temat mszy jako ofiary. Artykuł, przez analizę dokumentów poszczególnych dialogów ekumenicznych, prezentuje zakres osiągniętego postępu w tej dziedzinie. Kluczem do rozwiązania tej kontrowersji w najbardziej zaawansowanych dialogach okazała się biblijnie rozumiana kategoria pamiątki (anamnesis), która pozwoliła ukazać w sposób akceptowalny dla obu stron związek pomiędzy jedyną ofiarą Chrystusa na krzyżu a ofiarą eucharystyczną. W dalszej perspektywie uzyskanie większego zbliżenia między Kościołami chrześcijańskimi wymaga tu pokonania przeszkód w innych spornych obszarach (głównie sprawa ministra/szafarza Eucharystii), a także wypracowania nowej metodologii prowadzonych dialogów.

    In catholic circles there is a rather common belief that Lutheran Churches do not practice the anointing of the sick. The source of such a belief is the teaching contained in the M. Luther works, where the sacramental nature of the anointing of the sick is categorically denied. In modern times however, and especially since the middle of the 20th century, in many Lutheran Churches we have been able to notice a come back to the anointment rite, seen as a form of service of the Church towards the sick testified in the New Testament. This process is also a fruit of the development of mutual ecumenical links. The paper presents this phenomenon within the German Lutheranism, where is has the longest history and rich liturgical forms. A detailed analysis of the de velopment of the liturgical forms of the anointing of the sick in the Lutheran Churches of Germany since the 19th century leads to optimistic theological conclusions as to the ecumenical prospects in this domain.

    Theological and Biblical Basis for Construing the Eucharist… as a Memorial to the Sacrifice of Christ

    The fundamental problem addressed in the article is the question of how, based on the Scriptures, believers participating in the Eucharist have access to Christ’s salvific sacrifice on the cross. The author takes as a starting point Jesus’ words uttered at the Last Supper: “Do this in memory of me” (gr. tuto poieite eis ten emen anamnesin) and considers it crucial to understand the original meaning of the word “memorial” (gr. anamnesis). He carries out his analysis in two stages. First, he reaches for the Hebrew word zikkaron as the equivalent of the New Testamental term anamnesis and proves it is deeply rooted in the cult language of Judaism. Then, in this context, he carries out an exegesis of the words of the institution of the Eucharist, which he extends by the explanations offered by the author of the Letter to the Hebrews, where we find a full understanding of Christ’s sacrifice made “once for all.” The rediscovery in theology of the full understanding of the concept of memorial-anamnesis from the words of the institution of the Eucharist only took place in the biblical and liturgical research of the twentieth century, the achievements of which constitute here a fundamental point of reference for the author’s search. The result of this process was the reception and return to the biblical-patristic approach to the memorial in Catholic teaching about the Eucharist as a sacrifice and the breaking of the deadlock in ecumenical dialogue in this area.

    Voice of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI in Defence of the Eucharist as a Propitiatory Sacrifice in the Context of the Catholic-Protestant Controversy

    The article was inspired by the text Significatio della Comunione contained in Benedict XVI’s posthumously published book Che cos’è il cristianesimo. Quasi un testamento spirituale, which caused a considerable stir in ecumenical circles and was usually interpreted as an expression of the senior pope’s opinion about the impossibility of intercommunion with Protestants. The author tries to read the meaning of this text in a different way, considering it as Benedict XVI’s last voice in the theological discourse, giving inspiration for further research. The article consists of two main parts. The first part presents the theological background of the issue of the Mass as a propitiatory sacrifice in three dimensions relevant here: the biblical and theological basis, the essence of the Catholic-Protestant controversy in this regard, and the rapprochement on the path of contemporary ecumenical dialogue. The second section is a chronological overview of Ratzinger’s theological contribution to the resolution of this controversy from the 1960s to the end of his pontificate. Here we see that this theologian’s work is not only in the line of the theological avant-garde breaking the stereotypes of the thinking of the time of the Reformation split, but also has an original contribution to the search for a path toward Eucharistic communion. The peculiarity of Ratzinger’s theology here is, above all, a unique theological innovation drawing from fidelity to Tradition – there is no search for irenic shortcuts towards unity, but rather a diligent search for truth in the sources of Revelation, as summarized in the text mentioned at the beginning, published after his death.

    Współczesne uwarunkowania posługi duchowej wobec chorych w Polsce – aspekty medyczne, prawne, duszpasterskie i ekumeniczne

    Since the mid-20th century numerous factors have emerged which have substantially influenced the change in the form of spiritual service to the sick. The author indicates four such basic domains in which the most important changes in this respect have occurred. In medical sciences we are currently witnessing the passage from the biomedical paradigm to the holistic one, which implies an appreciation of cultural factor influence on the treatment process. This results in recognising the value of the chaplain service in the hospital. As far as the civil law is concerned, in the 90s of the 20th century in Poland regulations were introduced which regulate relationships between the state and religious communities. These regulations ensured legal guarantees for the chaplain service in hospitals. The Second Vatican Council initiated a reform of the sacrament of anointing of the sick, which has deeply transformed the form of the pastoral sick care. In this respect, the author analyses the recent instruction on this subject, issued by the Polish Bishops’ Conference. Finally, the forth part of the paper outlines the ecumenical dimension of the spiritual help for the sick of other denominations, which is currently of an increasing practical importance in view of the growing migration movements in Europe. Ultimately, the goal of the paper is to indicate guidelines for chaplains servicing the sick which would be adequate in the context of the above mentioned modern determinants.
