29 grudnia 2020 r. minęło 850 lat od czasu męczeńskiej śmierci świętego Tomasza Becketa. Jakkolwiek historia tej postaci jest w polskiej literaturze historiograficznej i hagiograficznej często porównywana do Stanisława ze Szczepanowa, to zarówno formy oddawania czci jak i zasięg kultu angielskiego męczennika był o wiele szerszy niż cześć oddawana biskupowi krakowskiemu. Zadaniem, jakie postawił sobie autor artykułu, jest przybliżenie niektórych aspektów kultu Tomasza Becketa na ziemiach średniowiecznej Anglii, wyrażanego w piśmiennictwie, jubilerstwie, sztuce oraz architekturze. W tym celu autor posłużył się dostępnymi najnowszymi ustaleniami badaczy tego tematu, reprezentującymi dziedziny takie jak: historia, archeologia oraz historia sztuki.

Polish scholars dealing with the history and history of the liturgy have so far ignored or downplayed topics related to the rituals of the Holy Mass and the English liturgical traditions of the day before the Reformation. It seems unfair, especially in the context of the study of the early Reformation in England and the sources on which new liturgical forms were founded, created at the end of the first half of the sixteenth century. The article aims to approximate the customs of the diocese of Salisbury and York and compare them with the new form of Mass prepared by Thomas Cranmer. The analysis of the changes that took place at the time in the liturgy of the English state church indicates their ambiguous character. For many inhabitants of the kingdom, after 1534 (The act of supremacy) the only change was the fact that at the head of the Church, instead of the Pope, the king stood and his name was mentioned in the Canon. Almost unchanged, up to 1548, remained issues related to the liturgy of the Holy Mass (form, ordinances), while medieval Catholic liturgical customs became the ground on which the Order of Communion was created (The Order of the Communion).

The article focuses on the presentation of the biography of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger in comparison with the events taking place at the time of the implementation of Sacrosanctum Concilium in order to present the sources and development of his concepts regarding liturgical renewal. His works from the time of the Archbishop of Munich and Freising (Freising), cardinal and prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, are also presented in the form of a short review. Also addressed are Cardinal Ratzinger’s relationship to the Liturgical Movement, which had a significant influence on the Council’s constitution, and his own concept of a New Liturgical Movement that would “revive the true legacy of the Council”. The author of the article, analyzing the views of Joseph Ratzinger regarding the reform of the liturgy, as well as his own vision of it, used the rich literary output of the present senior pope, which is primarily in the eleventh volume of his collected works entitled Theology of the liturgy and interviews given by cardinal Ratzinger to Peter Seewald.
