Benignitas pastoralis in the Proclamation of the Word of God

Pope Francis addresses to the whole Church the appeal for pastoral conversion, involving the proclamation of the Gospel to all people yearning for the kindness and sensitivity of the Saviour. In the teaching of the Bishop of Rome, benignitas pastoralis plays an important role as a spirit of mercy and gentleness accompanying pastoral concern for sinners – the weak, the suffering and despairing. Pastoral gentleness should also shape the ministry of the word which continued to play a significant function in the saving mission of the Church. Because benignitas pastoralis was most fully expressed in the Incarnation of the Son of God, Jesus Christ and His earthly activity, it is why the task of preachers of the word of God is to prolong the mission of the Saviour, showing people the gentle and merciful face of God, bending solicitously over human weakness and proclaiming the message of salvation in a simple and comprehensible language. The presence of benignitas pastoralis in preaching makes it possible to reach the audience with the Gospel, discovering the true face of a merciful God, and find in His word a source of strength needed for their spiritual growth. So executed, the ministry of the word is opposed to Pelagianism, rigorism and permissiveness, because it points to the “primacy” of God’s love which thus enables man to achieve the ideal of holiness according to the ideal of the Gospel.
Evangelization in Terms of Indigenous Latin-American Theology

Indigenous theology, which appeared in Latin America in the mid-1980s, practiced by the followers of Christ, wants to serve the dialogue between native religions and Christianity. It has its method, its subject is the faithful people, and the main object of reflection is the spiritual experience accumulated in native cultures since pre-Columbian times. Indigenous theology wants to contribute to evangelization attracting people and to the authentic inculturation of the faith in areas inhabited by native Amerindians. An analysis of the texts written by Indigenous theologians leads to the discovery of how this theology is practiced, and especially what its view of evangelization is. Despite its shortcomings and doubtful approaches from the perspective of Catholic orthodoxy, indigenous theology can enliven the Church-wide discussion on evangelization and contribute to its dynamism in modern times.
Magisterium pastoralne w posłudze papieża Franciszka

The teaching of Pope Francis raises some controversy, and even causes accusations of infidelity to Catholic Tradition and turning away from the teaching of his predecessors on the throne of Peter. Such reactions may be due to a misunderstanding of the nature of the papal Magisterium, which has a clear pastoral profile. This article aims to help understand the Pope’s intentions and the content of his teaching, showing the Church’s turn towards pastoral issues, made at the Second Vatican Council inspired by John XXIII, as well as Francis’ approach to the Church’s transmission of the Christian truth. For this purpose, the documents of the Church will be used, the analysis of which, supported by the reflection of theologians, allows the justification of the thesis that the Magisterium teaching of Pope Francis is a continuation of the conciliar thought both in terms of its form and the content of its message. This approach to the transmission of the Christian truth enriches the inner life of the Church and dynamizes its activity in the world.

Kościół katolicki po Soborze Watykańskim II coraz więcej uwagi przywiązuje do mistagogii, do czego w znacznej mierze przyczynił się Karl Rahner. Wzywa on do jej praktykowania w duszpasterstwie ze względu na konieczność zmiany sposobu przekazu wiary, która będzie zanikać, jeśli ludzie nie zostaną wprowadzeni w bezpośrednie, osobiste doświadczenie Boga. Dlatego Kościół w swej działalności pastoralnej nie może się ograniczyć do wykładu doktryny chrześcijańskiej, lecz winien wskazywać ludziom drogi prowadzące do życia w zjednoczeniu z Bogiem i towarzyszyć im w osiąganiu pełni człowieczeństwa. Również głoszenie słowa Bożego ma mieć charakter mistagogiczny, czyli odsłaniać ślady obecności Boga w ludzkiej rzeczywistości, odpowiadać na najgłębsze potrzeby duchowe słuchaczy i wspierać ludzi w podejmowaniu decyzji o życiu w zjednoczeniu z Bogiem. Rahnerowska koncepcja mistagogii egzystencjalnej nie neguje potrzeby mistagogii liturgicznej, ale apeluje o jej ścisłe powiązanie z codzienną ludzką egzystencją.
Terapeutyczna rola benignitas pastoralis

W czasach współczesnych propagowana jest kultura terapeutyczna, w której człowiek wyraża sprzeciw wobec wszelkich form cierpienia oraz bólu i podejmuje wiele wysiłków, aby zachować zdrowie i dobre samopoczucie. Wszystko to stanowi wyzwanie dla Kościoła, którego zadaniem jest pomóc ludziom wykorzystać terapeutyczny potencjał wiary chrześcijańskiej i służyć im pomocą w prowadzeniu zdrowego życia, w którym człowiek integruje wszystkie stany – chorobę, śmierć, błędne decyzje i niepowodzenia. W tym działaniu wspiera wierzących sam Bóg, pokazując im, jak służyć ludziom chorym na ciele i duszy, zniżając się ku nim ze swoją uprzedzającą miłością. To działanie Boga wypełnione troską o słabych i potrzebujących i łaskawością względem grzeszników jest wzorem dla duszpasterzy, którzy wezwani są do pełnienia swojej posługi w duchu benignitas pastoralis. Wówczas w nawiązywanych przez nich relacjach międzyosobowych komunikowane jest ludziom współczucie, solidarna bliskość i czułość Boga. Tak praktykowana łagodność duszpasterska prowadzi ludzi poszukujących uzdrowienia do zaakceptowania swojej kruchości i grzeszności, do zjednoczenia się z Bogiem i czerpania z tej więzi siły do pokonania swoich słabości i zranień duchowych.
The truth about man and for man. Practical implications of John Paul II’s encyclical “Fides et ratio”

Twenty-five years ago, John Paul II’s encyclical Fides et ratio was published, where the question of truth occupies a central place. The task of the Church is to transmit to people the truth revealed by Jesus Christ, which discloses the mystery of God and man, is accessible in faith, and appeals to the intellect to accept it. In these times, dominated by a pragmatic approach to reality, a question arises about the practical, existential meaning of the truth proclaimed by the Church. The content analysis of the papal teaching in “Fides et ratio” leads to the conclusion that the truth cannot be reduced to a set of ideas that enrich human cognition. Therefore, the ecclesial ‘diakonia’ of truth serves human life because it helps man use his freedom properly and leads him to the fullness of humanity. The truth allows man to protect himself from relativism and religious egalitarianism threats. The communication of truth should consider people’s needs to perceive it as a precious gift from God, not as a yoke.
Wpływ teologii ludu na magisterium homiletyczne papieża Franciszka

After the Second Vatican Council, the theology of the people appeared in Argentina. The task of the Argentinian theologians was to help the Church in Latin America to carry out a pastoral renewal taking into account the local cultural and religious context. Pope Francis, for whom the primary mission of the Church is to proclaim the Gospel, refers to this theological and pastoral concept in his universal teaching. In fulfilling her mission, the Church must refer to the experience of people and take into account all their needs. People themselves should be seen as the subjects of the proclamation of the word of God, because they constantly participate in dialogue with God, allow Him to shape their lives and contribute to strengthening the faith of the Church. Pope Francis, who devotes in his Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium a lot of attention to the issue of preparing and delivering the homily, shows how the life and faith of God’s people inspire the content of preaching, influence the homilist’s approach to the audience and help him speak in a language that is close and understandable to the addressees of the ministry of the word.
