Parents as parents-in-law in the light of Erik Erikson’s theory

The role of parents-in-law according to Erik Erikson’s theory, has been analyzed in this paper. Erikson claims that a man develops throughout his whole life, solving subsequently appearing crises. The proper solution of these crises enables the achievement of integration. The results of research, carried out by Menelaos Apostolou, regarding the influence of parents on the choice of a son or daughter-in-law have been presented in this paper. These results show that the marital choices of offspring most often lack their parents’ approval, and they often also lead parents to use manipulation techniques. Such regularity is often the basis of difficult spouse-parent-in-law relationships. The role of parents-in-law takes place in the period of middle adulthood in which an individual faces the productivity-stagnation process. It has been assumed that the role of parents-in-law is embedded in this crisis. According to Erikson, the crisis in the period of middle adulthood, as well as in any other period, is the friction of two opposing pursuits: progression and regression, where in case of middle adulthood, the progression stage is called productivity and regression – stagnation. Moreover, social and individual factors (including biological and psychological levels) activating regressive and progressive states in parents-in-law have been submitted for analysis. It is stressed, in this paper, that the parents’ virtue, which is care, is not limited only and exclusively to their own biological offspring – the process of upbringing should also include a broad understanding of the notion of providing welfare to future generations.
Przedmałżeńskie współżycie seksualne a odraczanie decyzji o małżeństwie i rodzicielstwie

In this publication it is analyzed how premarital sex influences postponing a decision to marry and decision to have children. Basic reasons of postponing marriage are also presented. It is proved that premarital sex delays such a developmental task as selection of the spouse. It is explained that the decision to marry is influenced by the following factors resulting from premarital sex: cultural acceptance of sex outside marriage, trauma due to interruption of previous sexual relations. Longer period of fertility in case of men than women is also considered.
Rodzice w roli teściów w świetle teorii zadań rozwojowych Roberta Havighursta

W niniejszym opracowaniu relacje rodziców z dorosłymi dziećmi i ich małżonkami analizowano w świetle teorii zadań rozwojowych R. Havighursta. Rodzice, których dzieci założyły własne rodziny, stają przed określonym zadaniem rozwojowym: nawiązania satysfakcjonującej relacji z dorosłymi dziećmi i ich małżonkami. Pozytywne rozwiązanie tego zadania daje satysfakcję i poczucie szczęścia, a negatywne skutkuje zniechęceniem, apatią, depresją. Źródła tego zadania to: zmiany fizyczne, oczekiwania (naciski) kulturowe oraz wartości, aspiracje jednostki. Obecnie ślub dziecka jest jedyną ważną ceremonią zmieniającą status młodych ludzi. W artykule opisane zostały trudności, których doświadczają teściowie w przyjęciu tej roli. Podano wskazówki, których przestrzeganie ułatwia seniorom prawidłowe przyjęcie roli teściów. Ich przestrzeganie jest jednak ogromnie trudne we współczesnych realiach kultury Zachodu (postawa egocentryzmu, braku wdzięczności młodszego pokolenia wobec starzejących się rodziców, niska dzietność Europejczyków).

This publication refers to the J. Bowlby’s attachment theory. This theory says that in human there is a biologically conditioned tendency to search and create proximity to significant persons. Followers of Bowlby – C. Hazan i P. Shaver considered romantic relation as an attachment relation. They have found that both in child-parent and romantic relation the same biological system is responsible for emotional and behavioral evolution of relation. The base of attachment is emotional and psychical proximity. In this work it is emphasized how important for creation of attachment in romantic relation first sexual contacts are. It is also underlined that breaking romantic or child-mother relation may provoke serious traumatism. The author of the publication claims that among factors influencing proximity in sexual relation are: emotional proximity, sex (stronger impact in case of women), earlier effort to abstain from this relation (eg. religiously motivated), whether the partner is or is not the first one (stronger impact in case of the first sexual partner).
