    Nowadays, catechesis became one of the main problems of contemporary life. Several people express theiz opinions upon this subject, gradually exposing the deep content it embodies,. The group the of scholars, who carry out a serious research in order to arrive at the essence of catechesis, grows more and more, however, individual authors stress different points. It is enough to mention here J. Jungmann, Jh. Colomb, B. Dreher, H. Halbfas, E. Alberich and A. Exeter, as people authoritative in catechesis, to become convinced that approach towardo Catechesis is serious, but varied at the same time. Catechetic symposium organized by Popal Salesian University in 1971, during which laymen and priests, representatives of secular didactics and catechesis, catholics and non-catholics expressed their opinions, contributed vasthy to deepening of the essence of catechesis, M. Berlini, G. Milanesi and G. Santomauro payed close attention to the psychological and sociological dimensions of catechesis. The support of pedagogical and didactic dimensions was stressed by L. Borghi, L. Radice, V. Vinay, A. Agazzi and G. Bertin. According to A. Mancini, G. Groppo, V. Vinay and A. Monast the most essential dimension in catechesis would, however, be the theological dimension. It would be a dangerous thing to reduce catechesis to one dimension only; on the contrary, the serious treatment of it requires looking at its essence tough multitude of dimensions. In such a formulation, catechesis, being, the evangelization of the world, would be psychologically and sociologically conditioned, and would realize the aim of meeting with God through teaching, upbringing, and evangelic prophesying.

    In the evolution of catechesis – in the present article – three stages are presented: the first two as partial, and the third one as comparatively full. It started from extracting and adopting some values of the laic pedagogics, in order to pass on to extracting new educational values in religious educationists. They both, certainly contributing to progress, did not comprise the whole revival in themselves. A relatively full revival is shown only in the third stage begun by the issue of Pius XI’s encyclical „About the Christian Youth Education”, and passing on to the present treatment of the religious education referring to the Declaration about Christian education and other documents of the Vatican Council II.

    Three concepts of catechesis are presented and an answer is given to the question of what Polish youth catechesis is like. The three concepts are: catechesis for the young, catechesis about the young and catechesis of the young. The first is derived from the principles of life and the teachings of the Church as applied to the young, who are to accept it without reservation. The second has been proposed by young people; it resolves itself into a discussion of the problems od adolescent world; it speaks about young people, and in particular about their goals and aspirations. The third is a meating place for the worlds of the adults and of the young for Divine Revelation and human experience, for the Church’s teaching and the world’s scientific discoveries. All three concepts have some following in Poland. In practice, catechesis for the young is the most popular, although catechesis about the young is lately beginning to mark its presence in some circles. While he recognizes the unquestionable values of both, as well as their drawbacks, the author postulates catechesis of the young as the most suitable kind of catechesis for our time. He also appeals for cooperation with the young in both the preparation and the implementation of the catechetic programme.

    Recently much has been said and written on the subject of catechesis in the modern world. However, the voice of the 5th Synod of Bishops had special significance in this respect. By means of the Synod the whole Church expressed its views on the need for catechesis, its nature, contents, subject and methods. The present article is an attempt at indicating but also analysing the main problems of catechesis today. The basic material for carrying out this task was the synodal document “Instrumentum Laboris”. The author first discusses the origin of the document, analyses it, and then sets it contents against the achievements of modern catechetics. As a result he concluds that in its work, which found its expression in “Instrumentum Laboris”, the Synod treated the problem of the relation between catechesis and the Church in a significantly deeper way than previously. Taking a critical approach to the document analysed, the author of the article observes that it constitutes a fairly comprehensive catechetical synthesis but that at the same time it is not a coherent logical whole. Drawing on the richness of the document, modern catechetics can, undoubtedly, improve catechesis. At the same time, however, the ideas indicated in the document need to be further developed.

    The article begins with the notion of experience which it analyzes from the catechetical point of view, proceeding subsequently to the catechesis of experience. Experiance is treated as a direct relation to the reality as such. Close interrelationship of general experience and religious experience is stressed. The latter is understood as so-called comprehensive rather than distinct experience, being the deep existential experience of man. Thus, the attitude to God results from the attitude to the actuality. When relating catechesis to experience not only its employment in catechesis is suggested (i.s. bringing catechesis closer to experience), but also creation of catechesis resulting from and immersed in experience.

    Bishop Edward Materski has contributed significantly to Polish Catechization as a practitioner, organizor and theoretician. In the present study an attempt has been made to reveal the theory of catechization, leaving to other people aspects which interest them. The essential basis for the present paper constitute scientific papers. They bring us to conclude that the bishop is in favour of a Christocentric, ecclesial and humanistic catechesis. According to him catechesis is to lead us to the unity with Christ, to develop in the Church milieu and be open to the changes in the world. He emphasizes the significance of an integrated many-faceted and differentiated catechesis. Such a catechesis which is by all means a Polish catechesis and proves correct in difficult Polish conditions, should be further developed along this line.

    The department of catechetical science at the Catholic University of Lublin in engaged in empirical and theoretical research; it is interested in a wide range of problems: the history of catechesis; modern catechesis; the kerygmatic and anthropological tendencies; the political tendency; the principles, essence, and methods of catechesis; the catechesis of children, young people, and adults. Much has been written recently on the model of catechesis and its realization, on the catechesis of young people and adults. The present article is an attempt at a synthesis of the most important ideas contained in a number of carefully selected works, so that the achievements of research may become public property. Thus relations were defined between catechesis, the Holy Scriptures, and the liturgy; yong people were allowed to express their views on catechesis so that an appropriate model of this very important type of catechesis could be selected. Finally the catechesis of adults and the catechization of parents were discussed.
