We should choose in Luke 14:20 verb ἒλαβον as Semitic and non-attic rather than ἒγημα. 20th century scholarship came to the conclusion that it is impossible to decide which version of excuses (Luke 14:18-20 or Matt 22:5-6) is to be preferred as the original. The solution explaining that endings of the first two Lucan excuses are redactional (καί ἒχω ἀνάγκην ἐξελθών ἰδεῖν αὐτόν ἐρωτῶ σε, ἒχε με παρῃτημένον and καί πορεύομαι δοκιμάσαι αύτά ἐρωτῶ σε, ἒχε με παρῃτημένον) has been proposed. Now, Lucan and Matthean excuses have similar length. It is unlikely that repetition of ἠγόρασα belongs to the Lucan style and therefore his excuses may be original. Phrases καί πορεύομαι δοκιμάσαι αύτά and καί ἒχω ἀνάγκην ἐξελθών ἰδεῖν αὐτόν are antignostic insertions better understood in contrast with logion 64 of Gospel of Thomas where “dealers and merchants” are unconditionally condemned. Luke suggests in this way that misuse of earthly goods is improper, yet they should not be rejected. In antiquity marriage was associated with legitimate intercourse resulting in legitimate children. Christianity beginning with the marriage of Joseph and Mary sees in an ideal marriage way of salvation. This is why John Paul II described Marriage from Nazareth as “marriage-celibacy” and named Saint Paul’s ideal of marriage: “marriage-chastity”.
