Pozycja Book review: Rajmund Pietkiewicz, In Search of ‘the Genuine Word of God’: Reception of the West-- European Christian Hebraism in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the Renaissance, translated from Polish by Monika and Jacek Szela, Göttingen 2020, pp. 346Ron, Nathan (Papieski Wydział Teologiczny we Wrocławiu, 2021)Pozycja Nicholas of Cusa’s “Cribratio Alkorani” (1461): Sources, Scholars, and Narrative MaintenanceRon, Nathan (Papieski Wydział Teologiczny we Wrocławiu, 2023)The article points out that Cusanus scholars tend to celebrate their subject as a proponent of ‘interreligious dialogue.’ Preoccupied with Cusanus’ irenic and much-praised dialogue On the Peace of the Faith (De Pace Fidei, 1453), they either ignore or belittle significant issues, such as Cusanus’ active engagement in preparations for a crusade, the harsh polemical Scrutiny of the Qur’an (Cribratio Alkorani, 1461), which rejects the prophethood of Mohammad, and the harsh expressions against Mohammad in Cusanus’ sermons. The author’s thesis is that scholars employ filters that establish their agenda by devaluing or wiping away entirely anything not in line with On the Peace of the Faith; they defend and cultivate the prevalent narrative and their hero’s received image. In this paper, Nathan Ron exposes this unacceptable phenomenon and condemns it.Pozycja Renaissance Racism: Johannes Reuchlin (1455–1522) as an ExceptionRon, Nathan (Papieski Wydział Teologiczny we Wrocławiu, 2022)This paper argues that Reuchlin’s success in saving the Jewish books from destruction was even more significant than is usually accredited by historians. His struggle to preserve the Talmud and other Jewish books was conducted within a society infected with racism, mainly racial anti-Semitism, a phenomenon barely recognized and mostly denied by scholars of medieval and early-modern Europe. The paper sketches the basics of this racism. Although Reuchlin was unaware of the racial meaning of his defense of the Jews, one may nevertheless think of him as a Martin Luther King fighting racial discrimination against a defined minority. The 500th anniversary of Reuchlin’s death, to be marked in the summer of 2022, is an excellent opportunity to celebrate his exceptional conception of the Jews, essentially of humankind, in 16th century Europe.
