Pozycja Ecumenism in the Archdiocese of Malta During the Episcopate of Archbishop Joseph Mercieca (1976–2007)Scerri, Hector (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2016)The long episcopate of Mgr Joseph Mercieca, Archbishop of Malta from 1976 to 2007, is characterized by the fruitful application and implementation of the Second Vatican Council in this European nation, at the southernmost tip of the European Union of which it has been a member since 2004. This research article studies the gradual development of the Ecumenical Movement in this predominantly Catholic nation from the years immediately following the Council, right through the many initiatives during the period of Mercieca’s leadership of the Church in Malta, particularly the establishment of a Diocesan Ecumenical Commission on a sure footing, the collaboration with other Churches and ecclesial communities, the two pastoral visits of Pope John Paul II and the celebration of a Diocesan Pastoral Synod in the concluding years of his episcopate. This article serves as a case study on the genesis and the subsequent development of ecumenical relations in a local Church, the ecumenical initiatives taken over the years, and the way forward in this important pastoral dimension of an extrovert Church.Pozycja The Eucharist and Freedom: Recalling the Impact of the Magisterium of Pope John Paul II at the International Eucharistic Congress at Wrocław (1997)Scerri, Hector (The Pontifical University of John Paul II in Cracow, 2012)The article treats the lasting relevance of the Magisterium of Blessed John Paul II during the Forty-sixth International Eucharistic Congress, held in the important Polish city of Wrocław, in 1997. The article highlights the originality of the theme of the Congress, namely, the important relationship binding together the celebration/adoration of the Eucharist and human freedom, while making appropriate cross-references to the same topic in other documents by the Slav Pope. Eucharistic orthopraxis is not only related to disinterested service in favour of one’s neighbour in commendable actions of diakonia, but also to the quest for freedom in the context of the respect of civil and social liberties and the exercise of religious freedom.Pozycja Pilgrims and Wayfarers to, at and from Ecumenical Gatherings and Encounters. Reading the Theme of the Journey to, at and From Ecumenical Events in the Light of ‟Porta fidei” and ‟Lumen fidei”Scerri, Hector (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2014)Pielgrzymi i wędrowcy do, w czasie i ze spotkań i zebrań ekumenicznych. Pozycja Some Trajectories on the Question of Ordination in Ecclesial Communities of the Reformed TraditionScerri, Hector (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2019)This article seeks to focus upon the situation regarding the question of ordained ministry within some of the Churches and Ecclesial Communities belonging to the Reformed Tradition. The central issue is that regarding the validity of ordination. The background to the genesis of the disagreement on the priesthood is described, as well as the attempts made to reach a consensus. The question regarding Anglican Orders is highlighted as a case study. This research suggests the usefulness of a scholarly ressourcement in the study of the validity of Orders. A possible path is proposed, towards the mutual understanding between the separated Churches on the question of ordination. This path follows the trajectory of the agreement, in 2001, on the common use of the anaphora of Addai and Mari by two separated Churches in the Middle East, and the subsequent eucharistic hospitality. Other recent conversations are referred to in the attempt to reach agreement, while recognising that specific obstacles do offer a major setback. The article is concluded by a number of concrete proposals.Pozycja The Ecumenical Commitment of Pope FrancisScerri, Hector (Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, 2013)The Ecumenical Movement was born outside the Roman Catholic Church, just over a century ago. The impetus of this Movement officially came in touch with the Catholic Church during the relatively short, yet eventful Pontificate, of Pope John XXIII. The incipit of each of the five Pontificates since then has been analysed for the ecumenical credentials of each of the men who was elected Bishop of Rome. On the 13th March 2013, we witnessed the election of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as the new Pope. In the few months which have passed since the election of Pope Francis, we have been able to focus our attention upon the few, yet highly important, ecumenical pronouncements he has made.Pozycja Wayfaring and Seafaring A Theological Reading of the “Mediterranean Journey”Scerri, Hector (The Pontifical University of John Paul II in Cracow, 2011)The article dwells upon the theme of the journey in the Mediterranean, the cradle of the three great monotheistic religions. Taking some paradigms for the journey from mythology, history and from Revelation, the physical journey is taken as a metaphor for the pilgrimage of life, an experience marked by maturation and conversion. This spiritual pilgrimage ultimately consists in the individual’s search for the Divine.
