Duch pokuty i wezwanie do nawrócenia
Sobolewski, Zbigniew (Wyższe Seminarium Duchowne Diecezji Siedleckiej im. Jana Pawła II, 2014)
The need of being purified of sins, reconciled with God and willingness of having the wrongs committed repaired, has always been present not only in Judaism and Christianity but also in all other religions. The Old Testament shows the Chosen Nation’s sinfulness, the mystery of its iniquity as well as the ability to do penance and be converted. Various penitential practices are its expression. Among them a distinctive place is given to fasting, prayer and almsgiving. The Old Testament speaks about God who is full of mercy and forgives those who repent and shows them His love. Jesus began his teaching with the call to repentance and penance. Christianity has accepted penitential legacy of the New Testament and that of the first Christians, creating numerous pious practices and devotions for the benefit of the spiritual revival. In the course of the ages the spirit of penance in the Church has developed and in various ways enlivened hearts of the faithful. This article deals with the spirit of penance in the Old and New Testament. It also analyses penitential liturgy and ascetic practices that were in support of spiritual revival. The final part points to the most popular contemporary penitential acts and devotions that prompt repentance among the faithful.

    Kapłan w służbie ubogich
Sobolewski, Zbigniew (Wyższe Seminarium Duchowne Diecezji Siedleckiej im. Jana Pawła II, 2009)
In his first encyclical, Benedict XVI reminded the whole Church that it was the duty of all clergy and laity as individual persons and of the Church as a community to carry the mission of proclaiming the word of God (evangelisation), ministering at cult (the care of the liturgy) and the witness of love of the neighbour (caritas). Unfortunately, while the duty of instruction and prayer, as well as that of administering the sacraments, has become deeply ingrained in the consciousness of the clergy and laity of the Polish Church, the duty of charitable activity reaches the consciousness only with difficulty. In this article we wish to present the evangelical motives for which priests have a duty not only to assist the poor and those in need of material and spiritual support, but also to be animators of charitable activity in parish communities. Among foundational arguments for a priestly duty of service of neighbours (caritas), the following must be called upon: the example of Christ the Servant, who, Himself poor, stood on the side of the poor, the mystery of the Eucharist, in which we take part, the pastoral love of the priest shaped after the love of Christ the Good Shepherd. Faithfulness to the example of actions and life of Christ Himself obliges the Church to live charity and service of the poor. Only a loving Church will be able to remain faithful to her Founder and her nature.

Powinności moralne w kontekście wolontariatu Caritas
Sobolewski, Zbigniew (Wydawnictwo Diecezjalne Adalbertinum, 2014)
The beginning of the new century brought liveliness in the interest of ethics in the world of business as well as among the organizations involved in the charitable activities, education and health. Caritas in Poland undertook many actions serving development of morality and religiosity of its full time workers and volunteers. Caring for spiritual, religious and ethical dimension of work, Caritas desires to deepen the motivation of their activities and enriches their actions with the evangelical meaning. Calls for attention to see the difference between philanthropy and christian mercy, which is the duty of every believer. Underlines the role of faith, hope and christian love in activities undertaken for the poor. We present in this article the rich teaching of John Paul II and Benedict XVI regarding voluntary work. The Popes explain, that in the work of Caritas counts professionalism of course, but even more the love for the poor, elderly, sick and handicapped. That love gives sense of diakonia in the Church. Shows how it is important for Caritas workers and volunteers to respect the ethical Code as well as their religious formation. The ethical Code portrays values important to workers and volunteers of Caritas, influencing their attitude towards others. We underline the necessity of placing the moral requirements for all those involved in the charity work in the Church and on behalf of the Church.

Starotestamentalne wezwanie do pokuty za grzechy i nawrócenia
Sobolewski, Zbigniew (Wyższe Seminarium Duchowne Diecezji Siedleckiej im. Jana Pawła II, 2013)
Not only in the Old Testament, but in the pagan religions we meet with many forms of penance for sins and conversion. This raises the desire of reparation of evil done and liberation from sins. God in the Old Testament very often called to conversion both individual persons as well as the whole community of Israel. He revealed His mercy, kindness and graciousness for people whose sins remain unpaid by excusing of the sentence. The readiness to forgive sins of those, who repent and the will to bestow them with peace fully expresses His kindness and mercy. The author in the present article discusses the necessity and nature of penance, to which the just and at the same time merciful God urges his people. Then, the hardness and impiety, idolatry and resistance will be shown, because they brought the right punishment of God and shut out the possibility of forgiveness and reconciliation. Finally, the common penitential practices and penitential liturgy in the Old Testament will be discussed, as they express the desire of sincere conversion. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving became in Christianity the main practices, which serve to obtain the forgiveness of sins and rebuild the communion with God.

Św. Jozafat Kuncewicz – reformator Cerkwi na Rusi
Sobolewski, Zbigniew (Wydawnictwo Diecezjalne Adalbertinum, 2023)
400th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Jozafat Kuncewicz is an opportunity to look at the bishopʼs activities in Polotsk. The author of the article begins presenting the reforming activity of Archbishop Josaphat by depicting historical conditions of the Polotsk diocese in the beginning of the 16th century. He emphasizes the need for reforms in the spiritual and moral field. This church at the time was in a state of deep economic, moral and spiritual crisis. The Archbishop focused on raising the intellectual and moral level of the clergy through diocesan synods, promoting the Catechism and the rules of priestly life. He targeted vices such as drinking, gambling addiction, and greed. He demanded his priests follow the rules of priestly life proper to the Church. Josaphat also undertook the work of moral and religious upliftment of the lay faithful. He used sermons and personal dialogue as a tool to combat widespread religious ignorance. He encouraged people to go to confession frequently and regularly participate in the Eucharist. The article draws on materials from the beatification and canonization process of St. Josaphat and the most important studies of the Saintʼs biography in Polish. The author emphasizes the relevance of Saint Josaphat’s reforming methods. He highlights the value of dialogue as an effective tool of evangelization.
