    The teaching of Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko falls within the scope of patriotic preaching in Poland. In the years 1982–1984 he celebrated famous church services for the Homeland at the church of Saint Stanislaw Kostka in the Warsaw district of Żoliborz. Each monthly service had a unique form since it included prayers for the Nation, singing, special decoration of the chancel, poetry recitals, and a sermon. All of that was designed to convey a patriotic message, typically focusing on one subject, as each mass was dedicated to a different issue. The liturgy of 30 January 1983 was exceptional, which the martyr for communism celebrated on the 120th anniversary of the January Uprising. In the sermon, he presented the social situation leading to a common effort to regain independence in 1863. Popiełuszko referred to the November Uprising, the Polish–Soviet War and World War II in order to better present the history of Polish efforts to make the Nation and Poland free. The chaplain of the Solidarity Movement used that to strengthen the faithful’s love of the Homeland, so that they would become hopeful and steadfast in their struggle for the rights of individual people and society to be respected, disregarded by the totalitarian regime. The whole event was made complete by the use of special decorations and poetic contributions.

    Form Blessed Rev. Jerzy Popieluszko and the content of his sermons, preached in the church Stanislaus Kostka in Warsaw’s Żoliborz already permanently etched in Polish history. Celebrated by him during martial law masses for the country attracted crowds of the faithful, and the content of homilies were full of patriotic and historical aspects. “Żoliborz preacher” in their teaching often referred to the events connected with the history of Poland, as well as profiles of genuine patriots to show a true and lasting values, as well as a remedy for man during the communist enslavement. Images of Polish history in the ministry, “the words” served Rev. Popieluszko to show the source of hope and witness the strength and, above all, to the example of the rebirth of the nation, even the most tragic moments of history. Using the historical aspects of the “martyr of communism”, he also wanted to show where lies the cause of the fall of man and the nation, and how, building on God, tormented society can be reborn.

    Msze św. za Ojczyznę sprawowane przez bł. ks. Jerzego Popiełuszkę na warszawskim Żoliborzu w latach 1982-1984 są jednym z podstawowych elementów rozpoznawczych jego posługi. W czasie owych liturgii wygłosił on słynne kazania, które z czasem stały się m.in. powodem działań aparatu represji komunistycznego wymierzonego w kapelana „Solidarności”. Każda z comiesięcznych Eucharystii była poświęcona konkretnemu tematowi, który wyznaczała rocznica historyczna bądź bieżące wydarzenie społeczne. Podobnie było w maju 1983 r., kiedy to ks. Jerzy w przesłaniu Mszy św. za Ojczyznę, skupił się na ukazaniu maryjnego aspektu polskości, a także wskazaniu na Matkę Bożą jako najpewniejszą orędowniczkę dla uciśnionego narodu. Ów temat zawierał się w szerszym wymiarze maryjnym przejawiającym się w życiu oraz działalności męczennika komunizmu. Idea przewodnia Mszy św. za Ojczyznę z 29 maja 1983 r., wyrażała się przede wszystkim w przepowiadaniu błogosławionego, śpiewanych pieśniach, modlitwie wiernych, dekoracji plastycznej zdobiącej prezbiterium żoliborskiej świątyni, jak również w recytowanej na zakończenie liturgii poezji. Ks. Popiełuszko, odwołując się do konkretnych wydarzeń z przeszłości Polski oraz do ówczesnych cierpień rodaków, wskazywał na towarzyszenie Maryi narodowi, który pomimo sytuacji i przeciwności zawsze do Niej się uciekał, uznając Jej Królowanie. Ks. Jerzy ukazywał Matkę Najświętszą jako najpewniejszą powierniczkę trudów i cierpień przeżywanych przez rodaków w stanie wojennym. Tym samym błogosławiony podtrzymywał w Polakach nadzieję, wiarę, formował religijno-patriotyczne postawy rodaków, którzy Msze św. za Ojczyznę traktowali jako wyjątkową „wyspę wolności”.

    Blessed Father Jerzy Popieluszko and the sermons he gave during the famous “Mass. for the Homeland”, the history of the Church in Poland are permanently inscribed. In his teaching, he defended and appealed for the concern of basic values for man and society (truth, freedom, justice, love, fortitude, Homeland). Among the many topics and values that appear in “zoliborz teaching”, the place has also found its place − solidarity. It has dual meaning here as it refers to NSZZ “Solidarnosc” and to the concept of idea as a common good. Fr. Popieluszko solidarity defined as the unity of complex hearts in action towards the common good, the constant pursuit of the nation, the society for truth, justice and freedom. Contemporary society, man, is often accompanied by the loss of interpersonal links leading to selfish materialism, the rejection of the idea of solidarity. Therefore, in this light, the teaching of Fr. Popieluszko appears as still up-to-date. Appropriate approach to the idea of solidarity and its realization excludes exploitation from society, any oppression and annihilation of others, and the spirit of solidarity becomes the path to peace and the development of society. Solidarity becomes the cornerstone of the inner and outer peace of man and of the community. Solidarity cannot be considered as one of many grounds for human and social life, but as a foundation from which other principles spring up, as pointed out by Blessed Father Jerzy Popieluszko.

    The central theme of the teaching of Fr. Jerzy Popieluszko was to serve the truth. Zoliborz preacher was consistent in proclaiming the need for the presence of values in society, but most of all, in the life of every human being. Priest Jerzy noticed that the pursuit of truth is not only inscribed in human nature, but also in his vocation. The basis of social order and internal peace of man is the truth which liberates man from servitude and evil. Today, even it is becoming a current need for the presence of truth. Fr. Popieluszko preached that based on divine Revelation, the Christian is bound to give witness to the truth and that they belong to Christ, your life. Also sees the suffering that comes to experience the man when he wants to live and act in truth, as befits a Christian, but he was thus convinced of the value of suffering and need courageous witness to the truth. Today there is no shortage slavery of ideologies, which insidiously trying to enslave the modern man internally. Man is always required to defend fundamental values, and above all to give witness to the truth on the model of Jesus Christ. At any time you will need heroic witnesses to the truth, going out in defense of Christian values. He knew that Fr. Jerzy Popieluszko himself who does not deny the truth and Christ when he had to give his life for the truth.

    In the history of Poland and the Catholic Church in the Homeland there is no lack of heroic witnesses, whose attitude, words and testimony has become a certain “sign of” a given historical period. Undoubtedly, such a character is Bl. Rev. Jerzy Popieluszko, whose teaching and famous “Mass. For the Homeland” – became a symbol of the end of the twentieth century in Poland. With these services, there was a certain custom of plastic decoration that decorated the chancel of the church of St. Stanislaw Kostka during each “Mass for Homeland”. They expressed the thematic content of the given service in a plastic form, thus constituting a patriotic-national-religious message. There were prevailing historical themes referring to the events at that time and the religious elements. The article presents chosen plastic decorations, also referring to the sermons of the “Zoliborz priest”. The analysis and presentation of works of art is possible thanks to archival collections of the Center for Documentation of the Life and Cult of Bl. Rev. Jerzy Popieluszko.

    The sermons which Bl. Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko preached in the course of his famous Masses for the Homeland (1982-1984) were devoted to many subjects. They mainly concerned the timeless values for man and society (truth, freedom, justice, solidarity, bravery, love). The presented topics also addressed current national, historical and patriotic subjects. Anniversaries were a special opportunities to do so. At the Żoliborski Church of St. Stanisław Kostka, where the blessed priest ministered, anniversaries of the January Uprising were being celebrated in a special way. It was commemorated in patriotic services. At the Mass for the homeland on January 29, 1984, the Warsaw preacher pointed to the dictator and leader of the uprising, Romuald Traugutt. His attitude of love for the homeland and personality traits were presented as contemporary ways to uphold patriotism and sacrificing oneself for Poland. The heroic conduct of the leader of the January Uprising served the blessed priest in portraying the road to the freedom for man and the Homeland and achieving the Christian vocation.
