    Po II wojnie światowej nastąpił gwałtowny rozwój przemysłu na Górnym Śląsku. Wskutek tego powstały nowe miasta, które stały się ośrodkami przemysłu ciężkiego. Najmocniej rozwinęło się górnictwo. Po upadku komunizmu nastąpiło przejście do gospodarki rynkowej. Skutkiem tego była restrukturyzacja przemysłu i likwidacja zakładów pracy. Doprowadziło to do wzrostu bezrobocia. Problem ten zauważał także arcybiskup katowicki Damian Zimoń, który w 2001 r. opublikował dokument pod tytułem Kościół katolicki na Śląsku wobec bezrobocia. Temat bezrobocia był także poruszany podczas pielgrzymek stanowych do sanktuarium Matki Bożej w Piekarach Śląskich. Stąd też arcybiskupa katowickiego można nazwać „biskupem bezrobotnych”.

    Calendar “From the Earth” is a periodical appearing since 1984 to the present day. It is published by “Saint Jack’s Bookstore”. One of its aims, i.a, is the presentation of the history of the Diocese of Katowice in a very broad context. So far many articles on this subject taking into account the situation of the Church in this area have appeared.
