Józef Garampi i początki studiów nad dziejami polskiej nuncjatury
Wojtyska, Henryk Damian (Akademia Teologii Katolickiej w Warszawie, 1988)
The first scholar who began to study the history of the Polish nunciature was Joseph Garampi, papal nuncio in Poland 1772-1776. During his sojourn in our country, he not only put in order and described the archives of the nunciature in Warsaw, but, based mostly on its content, he also composed two very important writings, which he dedicated to his successors in order to facilitate their work, especially in the matters of diplomatic protocol and jurisdictional controversies. Both of these writings are conserved in manuscripts. The first is Index rerum praeo:pue ecclesiasticarum Regni Poloniae a historical encyclopedia of Polish institutions, seen from the Roman-Catholic and papal point of view. This is conserved in two big codices in the Vatican Archives (Indice 190, 191). The second work is Synopsis legatorum et nuntiorum apostolicorum in Polonia. This writing was considered lost up to the present day. Wojtyska discovered in the Vatican its last redaction (Fondo Garampi, ms 23) and a number of notes and letters, which served in its composition. Based on these, he describes the work, containing a very rich amount of information on the history of the Polish nunciature from its beginnings to 1700. Reconstructing the stages of its becoming from the sources and the method used by Garampi, the author underlines his quite modern approach to the sources, completness of research and methodical perfection in justifying written assertions. All these render both of Garampi’s unknown works scientifically valid until today.

Lata święte w XV i XVI wieku
Wojtyska, Henryk Damian (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 1976)
The paper in a synthetic way describes the events of the Holy Years both in Rome and in Poland, from the last Jubilee of the 33-year cycle till that of 1600. The jubilee indulgence of 1450 was of special importance. It was celebrated in a messianic atmosphere of expected renewal of the Church after the period of dissention and decay. This jubilee attracted many Poles to the Holy City; moreover, since Pope Nicholas V extended it over to Poland in the next year, the jubilee became the first Remittance Year in the Church history by which the whole Polish nation could benefit without visiting Rome. The next jubilees, in particular the first of the 25-year cycles (1475), did not arouse such enthusiasm; it was only in the Holy Years of 1575 and 1600 that a large number of pilgrims gathered in Rome — the centre of the post-Trent Catholicism regenerating triumphally. And again, after a hundred years’ period, the grace of the last Holy Year in the 16th century became extended to Poland. In 1603 in Kraków all Poles could obtain the jubilee indulgence. According to the chroniclers of that time, spiritual fruits of that jubilee were extraordinarily great. In conclusion, the Holy Years history of the 15th and 16th centuries reveals the source and the principal, perennial sense of the jubilee indulgences, including that of Anno Sancto 1975.

Nieznana relacja o rzymskokatolickiej diecezji kijowskiej z roku 1659
Wojtyska, Henryk Damian (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 1996)
In view of the historical studies about the Roman-Catholic Kiev diocese, which have come out so far, the author presents the contents of a document he himself had discovered in the Orsini family’s archives in Rome (the archives stored in Archivio Capitolino). The document is in the Jesuit Marcin Hincza’s report on the state of the diocese before the Cossack insurrection in 1648. This piece of information was written in 1659, on demand of by card. Wirginiusz Orsini, protector of Poland in the Roman Curia, with regards to the efforts made by Tomasz Ujejski, bishop of Kiev, to establish a Kiev suffragan see for Stanisław Giannotti, a Varsovian of Italian origin. The paper discusses in turn the following: the territory of the diocese, the number of Catholics (ca 13.000) and their main clusters, education run by Jesuits in their colleges, successes in the work on converting the Orthodox believers to Catholicism and the reasons why they succeeded, as well as the attempts to convert Arians in the landed property of the Niemirycz family made by the Jesuits from Owrucz. The author supplements the data by a piece of information about other orders working in the diocese (Dominicans, Franciscans, Augustinians and discalced Carmelites). Then, comparing Hihcza’s report with a well-known report about the state of the diocese of 1636, he proves that they supplement each other perfectly, showing how extremely dynamic was in those years the Roman Catholicism’s expansion into the Kiev region, an expansion which was irreparably halted by the Cossack insurrection organized by Bohdan Chmielnicki in the years 1648-1654.
