H.U. von Balthasar is critical of presenting God in cosmological and anthropological perspectives. He proposes a third perspective that focuses from the very beginning on the dramatic story of love revealed in Jesus. Balthasar develops his Trinitarian theology in relation to the three transcendentals of Being: Beauty, Goodness and Truth. After all, love is beautiful, good and true. First of all, in the beautiful aspect of Jesus we see the beauty of the Trinity. Secondly, there is drama between infinite freedom (Triune God) and finite freedom (man). Finally, it is through the notion of beauty and the dramatic history of goodness that we discern truth, which is ultimately Trinitarian truth. Balthasar’s vision is dazzling in its scope, yet it raises the question of whether the theologian exceeds the limits in his passionate discussion of the inner life of the Trinity.
