Dogmatic analysis of canon law presupposes the autonomy of a private association of the faithful from the Church authority. A private association of the faithful is granted autonomy by law in terms of establishing an association, editing its own statutes, appointing a moderator and other officials of the association, managing temporal goods and freely achieving the objectives of the association. However the Church legislator set the limits of the autonomy of private associations of the faithful. According to can. 299, § 3 of the Code of Canon Law of 1983, the competent ecclesiastical authority, by recognizing the association’s statute, and by ascertaining the compliance of the statutory provisions with universal and particular law, includes the private association of the faithful in the order of canon law. The Church authority has the right to supervise the association in the field of preserving Catholic faith and morals, church discipline, implementation of the association’s legally defined goals and other statutory provisions, including the management of temporal goods, especially these intended for pious purposes.
