Abstract

Pierwsze katalogi biograficzne jezuitów zabitych za wiarę zostały opublikowane na początku XVII wieku. Była to reakcja na rosnącą liczbę zakonników, którzy oddali życie podczas prześladowań w różnych częściach świata. Nie bez znaczenia był fakt, że w pierwszych latach tego stulecia ich liczba osiągnęła sto. Tytuły publikacji odnoszą się do tego wątku, np. Centuria Religiosorum Societatis Iesu, qui hactenus ab Ethnicis, Mahumetanis, haereticis, aliisque impiis, pro Catholica fide acpietate interempti sunt (1608 r.) i Centuria prima. Das erste hundert der Geistlichen und Ordenspersonen (1605 r.). Teksty wszystkich list męczenników są podobne. Co ciekawe, miały także wersje artystyczne, a konkretnie ryciny z wizerunkami ofiar represji. Pierwsze katalogi zostały z czasem uzupełnione i opracowane na nowe sposoby. Szczególne osiągnięcia w tej dziedzinie mieli Phillippus Alegambe i Joannes Nadasi.

The first catalogs covering the biographies of the Jesuits who were killed for faith were published in the early seventeenth century. It was a reaction to the growing number of religious who gave their lives during the persecution in various parts of the world.
