One of the most important achievements of the last Vatican Council was the beginning of dialogue. It began the dialogue between Catholics and Protestants, Christians and non- Christians. It was also the start of the dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and Jews. The point of departure in this dialogue is faith in One God. Jews and Christians have a common spiritual heritage according to Rom 9: 4—5. Jesus of Nazareth was a Jew and his disciples were Jews, too. There was a lot of misunderstanding between Jews and Christians. The wrong interpretation of some of the NT texts, for example M att 27: 24—25, caused much suffering for Jews. The Vatican Council II declaration Nostra aetate and the teaching of Pope John Paul II have tried to repair these unjust opinions. An important step towards the dialogue between the Jews and Catholics in Poland was the letter of Polish bishops about the Jewish-Polish relations in the past. The Catholic-Jewish dialogue has a religious aspect. Jews and Christians may co-operate in defendig human rights and religious freedom in every part of the world.
