Abstrakt

The contemporary exegesis of the Fourth Gospel seems to devote considerable attention to ecclesiology, though the interpretations are by no means univocal. Scholarly opinions vary not only on much points as the interpretation of ecclesiological texts and references to the constitutive elements of the Church, but also with regard to the understanding of the relationship between ecclesiology and christology. The interpretation of the ecclesiological texts in the Fourth Gospel varies between individualistic readings of R. Bultmann, E. Schweizer, E. Käsemann and institutional readings of C. K. Barrett, R. Schnackenburg, D. Mollat, M.-E. Boismard. Almost all exegetes note the link between ecclesiology and christology of the Fourth Gospel. The interpretation of the relationship between ecclesiology and christology may be divided into three major orientations. According to so- authors (W. Langbrandtner, G. Richter) ecclesiology and christology are not the work of one writer; the former is said to have developed against the background of disputes within the church. Ot hers, like J. L. Martyn and R. E. Brown, view Fourth Gospel eccle siology mainly as a reflection of the structure of Johannine Church; ‘t is said to have acquired its shape in the course of christological disputes, particularly with Judaism. The third orientation treats the ecclesiology of the Fourth Gospel as the evangelist’s primary theological theme and explains its organis connexion with christology in the context of the editorial process (R. Schnackenburg, M.-É. Boismard).
