Abstract

Saint Hildegard of Bingen, named by Pope Benedict XVI a Doctor of the Church, delivers to the contemporary world a vision of faith, joining a referral to Christ with a natural cognition, which is appropriate for a modern knowledge. Known mainly from handbooks of rational dieting, she is, above all, the mystic, who was living a meditative life. She often describes her spiritual experiences in an enigmatic, symbolic or even a gloomy way. Being guided by love for the Church, she condemns its abuses and a lack of discipline, in her letters and prophecies. The saint prophet doesn’t restrict herself only to threats. She preaches the beauty of being faithful to one’s priestly or monastic vocation. She introduces to her life a mystery of the Trinity, the Incarnation and the Redemption, the Eucharist and the maternity of Mary, the eschatology and the Church. And she considers these truths of faith under the influence of God’s light. At the same time, she is active in a history, natural medicine, art and music, political and social life of a world in which she lives. She is equally a mystic and a person who has both feet on the ground. Pope Benedict XVI points out, that Saint Hildegard is a great sign for our faith.
