Abstrakt
Christian love belongs to the most fundamental theological themes. In this paper the author depicts the interpretation of Christian love that one can find in Benedict XVI’s encyclical letter Deus Caritas est. The Pope shows the unity of love in creation and history of salvation. Relying on the biblical and patristic testimony, he stresses the unity of eros and agape in God and the human person. Benedict XVI notes that what is radically new in God’s revelation is the Person of Jesus Christ. His death on the cross is a manifestation of the greatest love which God showed to humankind. The Bible shows clearly that God is the source of love. Man discovers in himself an ability to love which is always a response to the love of God. Now love proclaimed by the community of the Church is not an ideological strategy, but it results from the very essence of the Church. The love revealed in Christ is at the same time for the Church as a community of faith a task and criterion of reliability in the world.
