Abstract

The article presents merits and pastoral activity of a distinguished primate and cardinal on the 50th anniversary of his death. He significantly influenced the religious and ecclesiastic life of his time being not only a precursor of the Church reform but an outstanding statesman as well. Cardinal Hlond served his Country difficult times: in the reconstruction of the independent republic after the I World War and in the first days of communist tyranny. However, he appears to be an extremely controversial personage. Those who deliberate on his achievements split into uncompromising critics or devotees that tend towards his beatification.
