Abstract

The objective of this article was to find the answer to the question: what are the maternal attitudes of single women in the custody of The Mother and Child’s Home in Opole? The research was carried out from May to July 1999 involving 25 women, aged 25,6 on the average. It was based on PARI (Parental Attitude Research Instrument) – a questionnaire compiled by E.S. Shaefer and R. Bell and intended for mothers. On the basis of the research, some regularities have been found: (1) women in the custody of The Mother and Child’s Home in Opole manifest increased value of maternal attitudes with a tendency towards negative results in every aspect measured; (2) some of the reasons of this are: faulty upbringing, below average intellectual potential, lack of satisfactory emotional relationships with other people, absence of close bonds with partners; however, very young age of the women was not an important factor; (3) only one woman (4% of all the mothers involved) was willing to give her baby away for adoption.
