This paper is an attempt to outline the history of hermeneutics. It shows how hermeneutics evolved from Greek time, through the crisis of the tradition and the peak of romantic period to the proposals made by Martin Heidegger who continued to pursue philosophical hermeneutics originated by F.D.E. Schleiermacher. It turns out that it is not possible to present a heterogenous concept of hermeneutics ontologically. However one can distinguish the qualities specifying the basic concepts of hermeneutics, i.e. the idea of theory of culture as memory; the concept of consciousness enclosed within the system of signs of culture; the stress on the role of the language on various man-made products and an experience as a necessary element of understanding, etc. Nonetheless, to apply the notion of hermeneutics in research without a semantic specification, must seem to be problematic.
