Abstract

The author shows the literary background of the evangelical Beatitudes in the books of wisdom from the Old Testament (Psalms, Proverbs, and Sirach). He starts with an explication of the grammatical form of ashre (lit. „happiness”: status constructus dualis). Finally, he discusses two Qumran parallels (4Q185 and 525). They illustrate the transition from individual beatitudes, found in the sapiential literature of the Old Testament, to the series of evangelical beatitudes.
