Abstrakt

The article is focused on the problem of space in writings of Church Fathers. They had to confiront greek concepts of space and madę them acceptable for Christian theology. It was not an easy task and for them this problem appeared often as real puzzle. From one side Fathers wanted to avoid any suspicion that God is three dimensional being from another they could not speak of God’s omniprésence without spatial terms. To solve this difïïculty they often use analogy and métaphore. The main figure is St. Augustine who became one of the greatest opponents of applying spatial terms to God and at the same time introduced to theological language many useful metaphors like famous “sponge totally immersed in the sea in all its parts” Unfortunately there were no definite results of his (and others) activities and no theological concept of space appeared in this period.
