Abstract

In the year 1998 we celebrate the bicentenary of the Archdiocese of Warsaw. This paper is an outline of the rich history of the local Church of the capital of Poland. In the 11th century was instituted the Archidiaconate of Czersk-Warsaw. In 1798 the pope Pius VI created the Diocese of Warsaw depending directly on the Holy See. In 1818 the pope Pius VII transformed the diocese into archdiocese and metropolitan see. In the 200 years of its history the local Church of Warsaw took part in the struggle for independence of the Polish nation. It contributed to the spiritual and intellectual development. The paper presents several eminent individuals secular and clergy – that shaped the rich history of the local Church of Warsaw.
