Abstract

Święty Leon Wielki, papież, jest tym ze wszystkich Ojców Kościoła, który wygłosił największą liczbę kazań na temat postów przypadających na okres Wielkiego Postu lub tzw. Suche Dni (Dni Kwartalne). Poświęcił temu jedną trzecią swojego dzieła homiletycznego, przynajmniej tego, które przetrwało. Wysiłek Kościoła w czasie Wielkiego Postu jest walką duchową: obraz bitwy i metafory związane z wojną wychodzą często spod pióra Leona. Ta walka ma związać chrześcijanina ze zwycięstwem odniesionym przez Chrystusa zmartwychwstałego. Wojna prowadzona przeciwko wadom jest święta i sprawiedliwa. Powinna ona prowadzić do duchowego postępu wiernych. Leon używa pojęcia profectus (postęp), dobrze znanego filozofom pogańskim oraz autorom chrześcijańskim. Miłość do Boga, wyrażona przez post, będzie widoczna przez postęp w miłości do braci. Święty Leon zwraca uwagę na jałmużnę, którą należy łączyć z postem. Post i miłość są nierozłączne i podsumowują całe życie chrześcijańskie. Post naprawia zło, a miłość rozwija dobro na podobieństwo Boga, „który rozpoznaje obraz swojej własnej dobroci, tam gdzie znajduje troskę o miłosierdzie”. Zjednoczona z postem jałmużna skraca drogę do królestwa Bożego.

This fight is to bind a Christian with the victory of the Risen Christ. The war waged against vices is holy and just. It should lead to the spiritual progress of the faithful. Leo uses the concept profectus (progress), well known to pagan philosophers and Christian authors. Love of God, exercised through fasting, will show in the progress of love of the brethren. St. Leon draws attention to alms, which must be combined with fasting. Fasting and love are inseparable and summarize the entire Christian life. Fasting undoes the evil, and love develops the good in the likeness of God, “who recognizes the image of his own goodness, where there is concern for mercy.” Alms-giving united with fasting shortens the way to the kingdom of God.
