Pozycja Tradycja a sukcesja apostolska w myśli Ireneusza z Lyonu i TertulianaMejzner, Mirosław (Wydawnictwo Pallottinum, 2012)Due to the schisms and heresies of the second century, and especially the threat of Gnosticism, the Church had to defend its apostolic origin and clarify more precisely its own identity. The great Christian thinkers, such as St. Irenaeus and Tertullian, helped to enhance significantly the self-consciousness of the Church, pointing to the two pillars of its apostolicity: Tradition and succession, related to each other as closely as the soul to the body. The Apostolic Tradition, whose most succinct expressions became regula fidei or baptismal creed, would keep its legitimacy through the uninterrupted succession of bishops and their unity in matters of faith and discipline. This unity and apostolic succession was, in turn, the main criterion of distinguishing authentic ecclesial communities from heretical groups, and the teachings that originated from Christ through the Apostles from heterodox interpretations.
