The issue of wealth is a recurrent motif both in the Scriptures and in Greek and Hellenistic literature. To denote wealth, the biblical authors used the Hebrew terms kābôd, ‘ošer, hāmôn, haîl and hôn. They also applied the Greek nouns ploutos, chrêma, perisseía, mamonãs and timiótes. By contrast, Greek and Hellenistic authors stuck to the words ploutos and chrema while referring to wealth. This article offers an analysis of all those terms. Its first part discusses the terms used in the Hebrew Bible (1); the second – those found in the Septuagint (2); the third – the words used in Greek and Hellenistic literature (3); and the fourth – the vocabulary of the New Testament.
