The article presents postconciliar funeral rites practiced in the Church of France. The author discusses the ritual, which has been prepared in the spirit of the Vatican Council II renewal and adapted to the needs of the Roman-catholic Church in the French-speaking countries. The main exposed issue is the theology of these rites, associated with the Christian initiation displayed in eschatologica context. There has also been presented a specific sociological and religious situation of the faithful in France and their influence upon the quality of participation in the funeral liturgy. The author, as a parish priest, refers to his own experience while indicating a practical application of this rite into pastoral reality of the parish of Koenigsmacker (Metz diocese), considering a strong involvement of the lay in the arrangement and celebration of funerals.
