The singular contribution that the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy makes is in its presentation of the theological foundations of the Church’s liturgy. This article systematically presents the most important theological issues that surround the Council’s understanding of the liturgy, namely as continuation of the history of salvation, the continuing presence of the priesthood of Jesus Christ, the work/activity of the whole Church and the act celebrated both in the vernacular and with the full participation of the lay faithful.
