The paper entitled as above is devoted to teaching and liturgical research, which since publishing the constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium in 1963 developed and got strengthened in Poland in the past 50 years. The aim of the author of this article was to indicate the issues mentioned in the title rather than a comprehensive study of the said phenomena, as it is broad and multi-dimensional, and calls for much more in-depth studies that the one that can be presented in an article published in an academic magazine. The article tackles issues fixed and approved by the second Vatican Council, which to a large degree has been prepared and inspired by pre-conciliar initiatives of a liturgical movement and which bears fruits in terms of a new understanding of the liturgy, its celebration and participation in it. Due to the fact that since the last Council our perception of the liturgy has changed, the same applies to the way the liturgy is treated and taught in the conciliar documents. Also, we face a new way of teaching liturgies not only in seminars, but at theological departments as well, which starting from the mid 90s of the last century (and ending in 2003) became present in the structure of Polish state universities (although none of the theological departments removed during the times of the Polish People's Republic has been restored at the universities). In the analysed after-conciliar 50 years the number of theological schools of the academic level grew considerably. Therefore liturgical didactics became more intense. Liturgical research, including detailed issues and aspects, became more popular. Scientific approach to the liturgy (liturgies) is nowadays treated differently than before the II Vatican Council. It is perceived as equal to other theological fields, and more and more frequently one emphasises the need of a liturgical focus on the entire theology which in its nature is „liturgical”, since it is in the liturgy where theology reaches its final momentum and it is there where it derives is vitality and sense from. The major conclusion emerging from the article seems to be the well prepared Polish academics dealing with liturgies. The fact is, that 50 years after the announcement of the constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium every Polish liturgical department is chaired by independent researchers, namely professors and „dr hab.” (often employed as professors specialising, apart from few cases, in liturgies). Therefore the postulate, or even the conciliar and postconciliar requirement according to which lecturers in liturgies should have academic degrees in liturgies is indeed implemented. On the other hand, a solution that stimulates one’s reflection is a visible fact, that in some cases departments of liturgies (it applies especially to theological departments at the State universities) are not solely „liturgical”, but – in line with their name – comprise other teaching and research fields, such as, for example, homiletics, hagiography, sacred music, pastoral theology, or even social science.

Rev. Franciszek Blachnicki (1921-1987) was God’s servant, theologian and had developed methods of post Vatican II liturgical formation. Reflecting on the reformed liturgy made by the Second Vatican Council, he attempted to find passages and expressions related to the nature of liturgy and its essence, place and significance in the life of the church. These passages are coming from the draft documents of ecclesiology adopted by the Second Vatican Council. He wrote that not only individual provision on changes in the liturgy are in the Constitutions of the Sacred Liturgy but most importantly and revolutionary was to launch and introduce liturgy as a function of the church that expresses and at the same time builds, creates and realizes it. The Vatican II ecclesiological concept of Pastoral Work and Pastoral Theology centered on the notion of community (koinonia) and realization of the church was a foundation for Fr Blachnicki to divide pastoral theology. He emphasized three aspects: realization of the church on the sign, in the life of the individual and the community. This realization of the church on the sign is done through the liturgy of the Eucharist, sacraments and the preaching of the word of God, the homily. The specifics of the completion of the church is expressing and realizing through the sacrament as an effective sign. It means it is fulfilling its basic function as a community builder. Furthermore, it has become a sign and instrument of the internal communion with God and unity of the human race (SC 5; LG 1, 9, 26, 48).

The chosen topic about the participation of the Catholic Weekly “Sunday” in deepening understanding of the liturgical renewal of Second Vatican Council was presented using the example of the following publications: Pope’s General Audiences, The Liturgical Supplement, Saint of the Week, In the Care about the Development of Liturgical Spirituality, VIII Eucharistic Congress in Archdiocese of Czestochowa, Bear Witness of Priests to the Eucharistic Year. The analysis of the content of these publications shows that the mass media can also be used as a means of caring for people and for their earthly as well as eternal life, which is signalized in the teaching of the Church. The shape of people’s lives is dependent on the way they experience the liturgy. Their sacramental and liturgical lives can influence their daily life if they understand more accurately the Vatican II – renewed celebrations. Therefore, understanding the worship of God requires constant instruction and education. The article also points out the ways in which the Catholic Weekly “Sunday” helps the faithful to celebrate the worship of God: – to benefit the most from God’s Word people need not only to have the access to those texts but they also need to understand them (hence printing the Biblical readings with explanatory commentaries); – encouragement for the lay faithful to also say the everyday prayers, which is made easier thanks to the instructions how to use the book of the Liturgy of Hours (hence giving the volume and page numbers); – prior access to biblical readings makes it easier for lectors, psalmists, cantors and commentators to prepare better for the service; – using the texts of prayers and about them makes the lives of the faithful spiritually richer and influences their everyday choices; – in the church year much time is devoted to the worship of the Blessed Virgin Mary and saints; learning about their life and actions helps to understand that their worship is valid as a way to express Jesus Christ’s redemptive deed and the glory owed to God.

Wyzwania soborowej reformy liturgicznej w ocenie Romano Guardiniego (1964)

Romano Guardini expressed his opinion about challenges of the conciliar, liturgical reform in his letter, „Der Kultakt und die gegenwärtige Aufgabe der liturgischen Bildung”, addressed to the participants of the Third Liturgical Congress in Mainz, in 1964. In this letter, the aged author points to significant problems, gives important impulses to the discussion, and determines the most urgent tasks, which had to be done after passing the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy by the Second Vatican Council. Guardini is aware of the fact that in the new situation, it is necessary to tackle a number of detailed issues concerning the rite and liturgical texts, however, the question of the liturgical act is the most important task for him. He postulates to re-realise that the liturgical act is fulfilled by a man who is treated as a member of the community of the Church, and that in this act not only the spiritual inner being is activated, but the whole human being – a spirit and a body. It is also crucial to remember that the external human action is also a "prayer" – a religious act, and the circumstances that are included in this act, such as: time, place and used items are not only some exterior decoration, but they are its integral and essential elements, and as such, must be implemented. Moreover, it is crucial for the liturgy participant to see the deeper meaning in the activities performed in liturgy, as well as in the accepted, symbolic attitudes, i.e. to see the implementation of the liturgical act in them. Hence, Guardini emphasises the necessity for a solid liturgical formation, which besides teaching, must consist of authentic education in the liturgy. Furthermore, the problem of the so-called "ability to the liturgy" (Liturgiefähigkeit), which caused a lot of controversy, is also an important aspect of this Letter. The Guardini ’s provocative question about the human ability to the liturgy should be understood not as disputing or casting doubts on the universal truth about the human ability to celebrate and experience the liturgy, but as a sign of deep concern for the activation of this ability for the most fruitful participation in sacred rites. Analysing letter, it is possible to come to the conclusion that Guardini could look deeply, widely and farther than many other early commentators of the conciliar, liturgical reform, who were interested only in the direct implementation of the Council’s provisions. Guardini, in his characteristic way, did not specifically concentrate on the issues, which dealt with headings, rites or liturgical agenda, but rather on fundamental challenges related to the adoption of the first conciliar constitution. His inspiring thoughts largely contributed to the transfer of the debate on the implementation of the conciliar, liturgical reform from the pure literary to the existential level.
Liturgie katolickich Kościołów wschodnich wobec reformy liturgicznej Vaticanum II

The liturgical reform, called for by the Second Vatican Council, was indeed a great turning point for the Latin Church. The conciliar constitution on the liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, directed that the coming reform should be governed by the principle of adaptation and in harmony with Tradition. A criticism that is often made of this key document is that the Council seems to have omitted the Oriental Churches from its considerations, but such a view would only be partially true. In truth the Oriental Catholic Churches have always played a key part in the life of the Church, this was expressed in Orientalem Ecclesiarum, a decree of the Council on the Catholic Oriental Churches. In that same document an invitation was made to them to initiate a reform of the Oriental Liturgies. This reform was to be directed, not so much by aggiornamento as in the West, but by an invitation to them to explore the historical roots of their liturgical practices and especially to identity some of the Latin influences that have entered into them. The reform proposed by the Council was welcomed and the invitation to take part in a reform and renewal of the Liturgy is still taking place in many communities of the Christian Catholic East.

Liturgiereform in Deutschland. Versuch einer Bilanz

Autor postanowił pokazać zarówno motywy, jak i problemy, które były i są związane z poszczególnymi fazami wprowadzania reformy w Niemczech. Dlatego na początku pokazał, co niemieccy biskupi wnieśli do soborowej propozycji odnowy liturgii. Ich aktywność dotyczyła szczególnie reformy Mszału i Mszy św. oraz nowego porządku czytań mszalnych. Postulowano również docenienie czynnego udziału świeckich w liturgii oraz dowartościowanie proklamacji Słowa Bożego. Trzeba w tych wysiłkach widzieć różnice w propozycjach katolickich biskupów NRD oraz biskupów RFN. Widać je m.in. w uzasadnieniu roli, którą winna odgrywać liturgia w życiu wiernych. Drugi punkt wystąpienia poświęcony był problemowi wydawania niemieckojęzycznej wersji odnowionych ksiąg liturgicznych. W dziele tym znaczącą rolę odegrały instytuty liturgiczne Niemiec, Austrii i Szwajcarii. Prawie wszystkie księgi liturgiczne ukazały się w ciągu 15 lat po wydaniu konstytucji liturgicznej. Księgi te zasadniczo się sprawdziły i w praktyce zostały zaakceptowane. Oczywiście doszło również do samowolnych zmian lub sięgano do tekstów alternatywnych. Ciekawym punktem wystąpienia jest pokazanie, że wprowadzanie reformy przebiegało różnie w poszczególnych diecezjach. Jako przykład posłużyły tu dwie diecezje: Monastyr z zachodnich Niemiec i Drezno-Miśnia ze wschodnich. Różnice widać w szybkości przeprowadzania reformy, w swoistej radykalność, np. przekształcania liturgicznych pomieszczeń, co może być zrozumiane tylko w szerszym kontekście kulturowym. Swoją rolę odegrały tu też obecne w połowie lat 60-tych w społeczeństwie starej Republiki szeroko pojęte ruchy z jednej strony protestujące, a z drugiej reformistyczne, które miały wielki wpływ na część społecznych elit. W diecezji Monastyr pojawił się już przed soborem cały szereg zmian w liturgii. Pewnym znakiem ambicji odpowiedzialnych w tej diecezji zastań liturgii jest odbudowana po wojnie miejscowa katedra, w której, jeszcze przed soborem, przeprowadzono zmiany w strukturach sprawowanej liturgii. Nie orientowały się wertykalnie, ale bardziej horyzontalnie, dookoła ołtarza. W ten sposób wyprzedzono sobór. Samo przeprowadzenie reform nie odbyło się jednak bez konfliktów. Związane one były głównie z różnym rozumieniem roli świeckich w liturgii. Wiele pomysłów oznaczało dla wiernych zupełne przedstawienie się i zerwanie z dotychczasową praktyką. Z kolei wprowadzanie odnowy liturgicznej w Kościele katolickim w NRD musiało uwzględniać dwie sprawy: Kościół tu był i jest diasporą, przez to rozwijał się w bardzo prostych warunkach i odpowiednio prosto żył. Po wtóre, reforma liturgiczna musiała być przeprowadzona w kontekście polityki systemu totalitarnego, który znacząco ograniczał m.in. proces wydawania ksiąg liturgicznych oraz stosownej literatury. Ciekawa jest też różnica pomiędzy wschodem a zachodem Niemiec. Inaczej jak w zachodnich Niemczech, we wschodnich nie spotkano się z odrzuceniem reformy liturgicznej. Nie pojawił się też ruch tradycjonalistów. Jako przyczynę tego wymienia się dobre przygotowanie i roztropne przeprowadzenie reform. Istotne znaczenie w wystąpieniu prof. Kranemanna ma dokonana przez niego próba bilansu przeprowadzonej w krajach niemieckojęzycznych reformy liturgicznej. Podkreśla on, że dzieło to spoczywało na wielu ramionach. Ostatecznie były to parafie, wierni i kapłani, którzy na miej scu przeprowadzili projekty odnowy Kościoła. Problemy, które z tej okazji powstały, częściowo w samym procesie reformy, ale też w restrykcjach ze strony kierujących w Kościele, siłą rzeczy musiały doprowadzić do otrzeźwienia, które poniekąd trwa aż do czasów obecnych. Reforma liturgiczna nie byłaby możliwa bez biskupów wraz ze swoimi pracownikami, klerem i przede wszystkim wiernymi. To biskupi motywowali wszystkich do realizowania wytycznych Rzymu i koniecznych wymogów miejscowych. Część tych biskupów było inspirowanych wskazaniami ruchu liturgicznego z wczesnych lat XX w. Oprócz tego biskupi znający przedsoborowe postulaty okazali się wobec tych reform zasadniczo otwartymi i różnymi wskazaniami przygotowali wiernych. Choć nie było żadnych zasadniczych różnic wśród biskupów, to jednak można było zauważyć różnice w zaangażowaniu się tychże. W Kościele katolickim w Niemczech istniała w okresie powojennym wielce rozbudowana sieć ośrodków kształceniowych, które zostały również wykorzystywane dla wdrażania reform liturgicznych. Również istniały aktywne diecezjalne i ponaddiecezjalne czasopisma, np. gazety diecezjalne. W niektórych takich gazetach pojawiły się całe serie artykułów, które były wyjaśnieniem rzeczowym i kompetentnym, a jednocześnie popularnym poszczególnych kwestii liturgicznych. Nie wolno nam zapominać o licznych przedstawicielach laikatu działających w poszczególnych parafiach, bez których przeprowadzenie reform byłoby niemożliwe. W latach wprowadzania reformy bardzo mocno były rozbudowane w zachodnich krajach związkowych różne związki katolickie. Wielu świeckich angażowało się w takich związkach, jak: Kolping Verband czy Związek Katolickich Kobiet. Nie wolno przeoczyć wkładu tych ludzi w dzieło wprowadzania odnowy liturgii. Okazali się oni pod tym względem aktywistami w parafii, brali czynny udział w kształtowaniu liturgii, przez co umożliwili przeprowadzenie odnowy liturgii i Kościoła. Był to czas ożywionej dyskusji nad służbą Bożą wśród zaangażowanych wiernych. Gdy dochodziło do dyskusji z mniejszościami, które, oprócz zasadniczych spraw w reformie, bez kompromisu odrzucały miejscowe dodatki do reformy liturgicznej, jak np. styl muzyki kościelnej, niektóre eksperymenty liturgiczne, jak np. ukształtowanie liturgii młodzieżowej, przekształcenie pomieszczeń religijnych, dowolne kształtowanie modlitwy eucharystycznej, kompetencje między kapłanami a świeckimi w parafii itd., to tu również należy dostrzec napięcia, które panowały wtedy w poszczególnych parafiach. Reforma liturgiczna jako tako została tylko przez małą grupę odrzucona. Nie było więc problemu „czy” przyjąć reformę, kwestią zasadniczą było,,ja k ” ją wprowadzić w życie. Ważnym krokiem dla dalszego rozwoju Kościoła w RFN i w NRD były wielkie synody lat 70-tych. Synod w Würzburgu swoimi wnioskami w sprawach reformy liturgicznej uniezależnił się od innych. Początkowo traktowano reformę liturgiczną w zakresie spraw zasadniczych, potem dołączyły się problemy nowego kształtowania Mszy św. niedzielnej, Mszy dla dzieci i młodzieżowej, w końcu też nabożeństwa ekumeniczne. Przemiany społeczne sprawiły, że środowisko parafialne, w którym celebrowana jest liturgia, także diametralnie się zmieniło, przez co swoimi uroczystościami i wydarzeniami nie ma już wiele wspólnego z chrześcijańskimi wydarzeniami lub symbolami. Synod zwracał uwagę na skutki oddziaływania sekularyzacji na sferę liturgiczną, co zresztą już przed soborem było odczuwalne. Związanie wiernych z instytucją Kościoła już od lat 5O-tych zmalało i odtąd liczba uczestniczących w niedzielnej Mszy św. coraz bardziej malała. Również decyzje synodu, jeśli chodzi o Msze św., były tylko pewnym etapem w tym procesie. Na koniec autor pokazał trzy wyzwania, z którymi Kościół musi się dzisiaj zmierzyć. Pierwsze z nich sięga do przeszłości, bowiem XX w. pokazuje, przy wszelkim zróżnicowaniu Kościołów partykularnych, które wykazują się lepszym lub gorszym wprowadzeniem reformy liturgicznej, że koniecznej est również zreformowanie całokształtu życia religijnego współczesnych wiernych. Ta zasada powinna być dzisiaj coraz bardziej wyakcentowana, szczególnie tam, gdzie są „miejscowe” problemy. Kościół posoborowy w tym zakresie był o wiele dalej postępowy niż dzisiaj. Drugie dotyka teraźniejszości, która pokazuje, że uroczystości związane z udzielaniem sakramentów coraz mniej przemawiają do ludzi. Kranemann postuluje taką ich odnowę, by uczestnika na nowo kształtowały, aby wierni czuli się przez nie osobiście dotknięci. Liturgia, której forma przyświecała posoborowym reformatorom, docelowo powinna być bardziej mistagogiczna. Ostatnie spostrzeżenie dotyczy liczby tych, którzy się czują bardzo związani z Kościołem. Faktem jest, że ona zmalała. Liczba zaś bezwyznaniowych drastycznie wzrosła. Istnieją znaki, że ci ostatni szukają religijnie bardziej odpowiednich struktur wyznaniowych. W spojrzeniu wstecz, na dziesiątki lat posoborowych, należy stwierdzić, że Kościół koncentrował się wyłącznie na utrzymaniu wiernych we wspólnocie. Ponieważ ta metoda nie przyniosła pożądanego efektu Kranemann wskazuje na inną drogę, tę mianowicie, którą idzie czeski teolog Tomáš Halík. Dla niego ważni są ludzie poszukujący, a znajdujący się poza Kościołem. Ich należy wciągnąć do dialogu z wierzącymi. Dostrzega bowiem u nich ukrytą świadomość istnienia Boga. W rozmowie z wiernymi natomiast mogą dojść do pełnej świadomości Jego obecności w liturgii. Niebezpieczeństwo posoborowych aktywności liturgicznych może tkwić w tym, że to, co się znajduje poza horyzontem konkretnej działalności liturgicznej, za mało było zauważone. Dzisiaj już na to nie można sobie pozwolić, szczególnie nie w liturgii. Jest możliwe, że obecna rzeczywistość wskazuje na to, iż liturgiczne wytyczne soboru mogły być niewystarczające, aby rozwiązać problemy ciągle rozwijającego się świata.
Powstanie i przyjęcie Konstytucji o liturgii w relacjach jej autorów

From the author’s account on the text of the Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy from the Second Vatican Council and the process of adopting it, shows that from the very beginning it has faced various difficulties. The views of the supporters and opponents clashed on the liturgical reform. The major controversial issues were: the possibility of using different languages, receiving communion in two ways, con-celebration, music and singing in the liturgy. These differences were visible both during the work of the Commission as well as during the discussion on the council meeting. The prominent and well respected figure in the counciliar and post-counciliar liturgical reform was Archbishop Annibale Bugini CM (1912-1982) and has described it extensively. The author of this article also gave the view of other prominent liturgists at those times, especially Joseph A. Jungmn SJ, Salvatore Marsili OSB, Aime-Georges Martimort, Cipriano Vagaggini OSB, Joannes Wagner. The major opponents were: Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre and Cardinals Alfredo Ottaviani and Antonio Bacci.
Recepcja Konstytucji o liturgii w Kościele w Polsce

The Cardinal J. Ratzinger assessing the implementation process of the post-conciliar reform of the liturgy pointed to three basic categories: intelligibility, participation and simplicity. These categories had also influence on the reception of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy in the Church in Poland. The intelligibility category in the reception of the liturgical reform largely depended on its understanding by the priests and the lay believers. To understand the liturgy there were needed: adequate instruction and education, i.e. formation. Simultaneously, the works on the texts of the liturgical books and existing documents were being continued that needed to be improved in order to increase an involvement of the laity in the liturgy and its improvement. Polish bishops noted that the new rites and new liturgical texts themselves will do not bring a new style in pastoral ministry. What is needed is a change of mentality of the faithful and a new motivation to participate in the liturgy. Referring to the indications of the liturgical Constitution they reminded that the task of priests is watching so as the faithful to participate in the liturgical celebrations “consciously, actively and fruitfully” (SL 11). The reception process aimed at that in order a participation in the liturgy to involve the inner life of the human being which in turn would manifest in the external activities. In the reception of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy in the Church in Poland it was also paid attention to the fact so that the structure of the liturgy was characterized by a “noble simplicity”, which is to point out to the simplicity of the infinite God. The liturgical revival that was introduced in Poland was not an attempt to break with the liturgical tradition. The intention of the bishops was so that new forms of celebration of the liturgy were to be referred to the already existing ones. Therefore the rituals were simplified but their essence preserved. Among theological and liturgical publications there are numerous studies on the broadcasting of the Mass on radio or television. Less attention has been given to the role of the media present during the liturgy in our churches (books, microphones, new media). Since its beginnings, Christian liturgies were impossible without written texts (manuscripts are the first media). Without the press invented by Johannes Gutenberg the Luther’s Reformation would fail – and the Tridentine reform of the liturgy would be impossible. In the 20th century, the microphone has modified the liturgy: yet its effects, observed in 1974 by M. McLuhan, didn’t interest liturgists. The Church in 21 st century has to face a new phenomenon: new media (like smartphones or iPads) intrude into liturgy, trying to replace the “old” media (books).

The singular contribution that the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy makes is in its presentation of the theological foundations of the Church’s liturgy. This article systematically presents the most important theological issues that surround the Council’s understanding of the liturgy, namely as continuation of the history of salvation, the continuing presence of the priesthood of Jesus Christ, the work/activity of the whole Church and the act celebrated both in the vernacular and with the full participation of the lay faithful.
Wprowadzanie soborowej odnowy liturgii na przykładzie diecezji opolskiej

The Jubilee of fiftieth anniversary of adopting liturgical constitution celebrated in the academic community of Opole requires considering remarkable achievements connected with the introduction of the liturgical renewal which had its place in the local Church of Opole during recent period of time. Notable benefits were gained owing to actions of specific people. One of them is Bishop Franciszek Jop who served as a Chairman of Liturgical Commission in the Polish Episcopate from 1962 to 1975. Accepted function obliged him to active participation in subsequent work of the Second Vatican Council and Roman Commission. As Bishop of Opole Franciszek Jop was responsible for the post-Conciliar liturgical renewal in his diocese. He reorganised the Opole liturgical commission and encouraged its members to active involvement in familiarizing the Faithful with Polish-language version of liturgical books, process of adaptation former forms of pastoral liturgy into the current one and considered as most important, in developmental works of clergy and congregation. Those who most eagerly responded to Jop’s appeal were clergymen from Opole: Wacław Schenk and Helmut Sobeczko. Their great cooperation in the aspect of the new systems’ creation will be presented in the article, dedicated especially to priests and catechists. Further there will be discussed regularly improved prayer book “Droga do Nieba” and German-language confessionals. Mentioned prayers will be also considered in the aspect of their influence on post-Conciliar shaping of religiousness of the Faithful in Upper Silesia. Looking at the reception process of the post-Conciliar liturgical renewal from the perspective of fifty years it is legitimate to claim that the very process has not been finished yet. It can be observed in gradual introduction of Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and Permanent Deacon. Nevertheless, it should be admitted that plenty has been achieved. The Paschal Mystery could contribute to changes, so the Faithful could express and reveal others the Person of Jesus Christ and the actual nature of the real Church.
Recepcja Konstytucji o liturgii "Sacrosanctum concilium" w Katechizmie Kościoła Katolickiego

The article presents the manner in which the Catechism of the Catholic Church has treated and deepened the theology of the liturgy as it is found in the Conciliar Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium. The first part of the article discusses the “liturgical” structure of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. A detailed analysis of the Catechism helps us notice that this structure has become an integral part of the definition of the liturgy as it is found in the Constitution. Three realities come to the fore in both documents: mystery, celebration and Christian life. Speaking of the use and significance of the Constitution in the Catechism, one must remember the various semantic and historical contexts of both documents. This issue is explained in the second part of the article. It draws one’s attention to the fact that the Catechism could make use of both the entire theological richness contained in Sacrosanctum Concilium and other documents and liturgical books which have been published after Vatican II. The last part of the article presents selected detailed teachings of the Catechism about the nature of the liturgy and its role in the life of the Church. It gives special attention to the presence and action of the Most Holy Trinity in the liturgy while taking into consideration each of the divine Persons and the liturgy’s ecclesial dimension. The article ends with the conclusion that the Catechism has accepted, kept and broadened the theology of the liturgy as it is contained in the Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium.
Drogi i bezdroża muzyki kościelnej w Polsce po soborze watykańskim II

The liturgical reform of Vaticanum II, started fifty years ago with the announcement of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium), changed significantly also the musical dimension of the liturgy celebrated in Polish churches. There are two vectors of the conciliar reform which seem to determine the mainstream of those changes. Firstly, the participatio actuosa requirement, which in consequence led to both the extension of the conceptual range of musica sacra by adding the concepts of folk art and folk hymn, and the appreciation of the vernacular and native roots present in the church singing. Secondly, the requirement concerning the theological purification and intensification of the contents of ecclesiastical rites, so also the church singing involved in the liturgy. Throughout the recent fifty years, the Catholic Church in Poland has made much effort to promote new compositions and musical praxis in liturgy as well as to give it proper orientation and dynamics. As a result, not only has the repertoire been enriched with reference to quantity and content, but also the general quality of musical output in churches has risen. What is more, the number of qualified musicians and organizers of musical activities in parishes has increased, although still not satisfactorily. However, it does not mean that in the past as well as at present there have not been obstacles on the way to implement the conciliar ideals and postulates. The reform of church music is still conditioned by many tensions and seeks its adequate way placed somewhere between the validity of Church Law and the artistic autonomy, aesthetics and pastoral pragmatism, avant-garde and tradition, between sacrum and profanum. Reformative ideas, based on the inappropriately conceived criteria of modernity and pastoral pragmatism have happened to be misleading for church music directing it towards religious and musical kitsch, rubbish, primitive entertainment, banalization of art and, what follows, banalization of liturgy. The socio-political context of the Church reformative activities as well as the regrettable level of musical education in Polish society may only be partially blamed for such a state of things. To a great extent, it is also the result of the frequently inaccurately adjudged “conflict” which is somehow a part of the nature of the artistic activities undertaken by the Church. On the one hand, such art wants and even has to defend its aesthetic autonomy and artistic qualifications. On the other hand, its advocates want to remain submissive as servants of Christian prayer. Each generation is engaged anew in the challenge of undertaking and “easing” these natural tensions and conflicts in order to find the so-called “golden mean” Only the incessant deepening of both the theological consciousness and the aesthetic sensitivity would assure the right course of action. As a consequence, it may be pointed out that what church music nowadays needs most is the just and patient liturgical and musical education of both priests and the people.
