In the early period of Chrystianily both tenus „theology” and „science” had different meanings from those we ascribe them to-day. In the paper science of those times is confronted with the views of the Fathers which nowadays would be qualified as theological. Since it is impossible to delineate the Greek science from the Greek philosophy, the attitude of the early Christian writers towards the Greek wisdom in general is also taken into account. The most radical change in the understanding of the world, which came from the Christian doctorine, was due to the idea of creation. Interaction of this idea with the Greek cosmology is discussed at some length. Finally, the question is touched upon of whether the appearance of Christianity had any impact on progress in science.
