L’articolo è dedicato alla presentazione delle due dimensioni fondamentali della formazione integrale dei futuri diaconi permanenti, cioè quella intellettuale e pastorale. Il veloce cambiamento delle condizioni nelle quali si svolge il ministero diaconale, i cambi sociali e culturali, lo sviluppo delle scienze ecclesiastiche e laicali, lo sviluppo della vita cristiana nelle diverse tappe dell’esistenza esigono dai diaconi una solida formazione. Essa costituisce una condizione essenziale dalla quale dipende la fruttuosità del diaconato permanente ripristinato. Perciò ha un’importanza molto significativa. Dimensioni intellettuale e pastorale della formazione dei candidati al diaconato permanente sono strettamente legate tra di loro e si completano reciprocamente. I programmi della suddetta formazione sono contenute nelle „Rationes institutionis diaconorum permanentium” nazionali, elaborate dalle Conferenze Episcopali. La formazione intellettuale deve abbracciare tutte le discipline che fanno parte delle scienze ecclesiastiche e quelle legate con loro. Invece la formazione pastorale deve offrire l’aspetto teorico e pratico del ministero dei futuri diaconi affinché possano realizzare efficacemente i compiti pastorali tra il Popolo di Dio.

It is not easy for priests to carry out their pastoral ministry today. The challenges of our times are many and varied. These include, among other, the following: secularisation, religious indifference, moral relativism, individualism, hedonism, delicate ethical questions surrounding the beginning and end of life, problems posed by scientifc progress, inter-religious dialogue, and complex socio-political situations. When faced with these challenges, many priests are unable to deal with them and experience a crisis of various kinds, in their life, resulting oftentimes in the dramatic decision to leave the priesthood. Experience shows that there is a pressing need for an adequate human formation for future priests, not only for the fruitful outcome of their pastoral ministry, but also in order that they can overcome various diffculties and crises in their lives. A formation of this kind must be integral, comprising four dimensions: human, spiritual, intellectual and pastoral. The human dimension must be the foundation upon which the entire process of formation is built. By means of human formation, the formators must instil human virtues in the seminarians, educating them about the celibate life, forming them for obedience and the responsible use of freedom, moulding their moral conscience, their emotional maturity, the capacity to have mature contact with men and women and preparing them for the responsible use of social communications. A solid and complete human formation allows for the formation of missionary disciples “in love” with the Master, Pastors who “have the odour of the fock” and who want to live among them to serve them and to bring to them the mercy of God.

Today, the performance of pastoral service by the priest is not easy. There are many reasons this situation exists. Among those which are most influential are: secularization, hedonism, moral relativism, individualism, the complicated socio-political situation, and subjectivism in faith. Thus, it happens that the priest, discouraged by the failures in his service, betimes undertakes the dramatic decision to abandon the priesthood. In this atmosphere, assuring suitable formation for future priests, dedicated to the fruitful carrying out of the mission of Jesus the Good Shepherd to the contemporary world, becomes one of the most important tasks of the Church. This must be based upon the concept of a priestly identity fully in conformity with the Ecclesiastical Magisterium, which embraces four fundamental dimensions: human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral. Another issue of great importance is the careful verification of the suitability of the candidate for Orders, both at the time of their first admission to seminary as well as at the occasion of their promotion to Holy Orders.

Patriarch Joseph, the last but one son of Jacob, happens to be interpreted in the patristic tradition as a figure of Jesus Christ. One can find it in the texts of the ancient writers: Meliton of Sardes, Ireneus, Tertulian, Orygene, Hipolitus, Asterius the Sophist, Gregory of Elwira, and above all, St. Ambrose. The typological interpretation of Patriarch Joseph is extremely important with the Church Fathers of the first four centuries, it is true, yet it was emphasized by the saint bishop from Milan. He pinpoints that the Old Testament is a preparation for the New Testament, stressing at the same time the continuation of revelation and salvation, which were God’s intention and accomplished their fulfillment in Jesus Christ who came upon the earth. Various circumstance, however, under which Joseph lived and acted, provide St. Ambrose with an opportunity to reflect on the incarnation, passion, death and resurrection of the Saviour.
