Pozycja Ołtarz Zmarłych w baptysterium bazyliki mniejszej pw. św. Jakuba St. Apostoła i św. Agnieszki w Nysie jako interesujący zabytek śląskiej sztuki sakralnejSpielvogel, Izabela; Dziewior, Kamila (Redakcja Wydawnictw Wydziału Teologicznego Uniwersytetu Opolskiego, 2018)The Altar of the Dead in the baptistery of St. Jacob church in Nysa is a rare art monument with the presentation of Purgatory Souls. The article is an attempt to bring the object closer through a description, finding iconographic sources and ideological analysis of the work. The theme of Purgatory has found its place in the sacred art after the Council of Trent, and many iconographic themes have often been combined in his performances. The Altar of the Dead in Nysa is thus a work with many elements that together form a coherent, ideological whole. From these numerous elements of the altar, the central picture stands out, which is its compositional and ideological keystone. The painting contains three important issues for the Catholic faith: crucifixion, holy mass, and purgatory. In the Nysa altar, the depiction of purgatory plays a key role, because the work is dedicated to the souls of the dead that died during the war, and what goes with it is also to save these souls from purgatory through prayer. The altar from the baptistery of the church of St. Jacob is a valuable example of a seventeenth-century work of art in Silesia, presenting the artistic, cultural and moral values of the era and surroundings of Silesian burghers at that time.
