Pozycja Chrzest księcia Mieszka ISwastek, Józef (Wydawnictwo Pallottinum, 2016)Chrystianizacja ziem polskich była procesem długotrwałym. Pierwszym krokiem była misja cyrylometodiańska, która objęła południowe ziemie naszej ojczyzny: Śląsk oraz kraj Wiślan. Chrzest państwa Wiślan prawdopodobnie dokonał się już w roku 880, co potwierdzają najnowsze badania archeologiczne. Utrzymywanie, że decyzja Mieszka I o chrzcie była podyktowana poczuciem zagrożenia ze strony Niemiec wydaje się dziś bezpodstawna. Większym zagrożeniem dla Polan był Związek Wielecki, gdyż Wieleci w latach 963-967 kilkakrotnie najeżdżali ziemie zamieszkałe przez Polan. Książę Mieszko zawarł przymierze z Czechami przez małżeństwo z Dobrawą. W roku 972 udało mu się pokonać Wieletów, a ich przywódca, Wichman, poniósł śmierć. Decyzja o przyjęciu chrześcijaństwa była dla Mieszka niełatwa. Musiał się on liczyć z pogorszeniem stosunków z innymi plemionami Słowian czczących pogańskie bóstwa, a jednocześnie obawiać rozbicia wewnątrz własnego państwa, gdyż Polanie byli mocno przywiązani do swoich wierzeń. Chociaż okoliczności chrztu, miejsce oraz jego szafarz ciągle budzą wiele wątpliwości i pytań to decyzję Mieszka I, chociaż ryzykowną, należy jednak zaliczyć do niezwykle trafnych. Chrzest Mieszka ułatwił władcy Polan zjednoczenie ziem swojego nowego państwa, a chrystianizacja przyniosła nową jakość w kulturze i zwyczajach ludności.
