The first part of the article is the presentation of the general meaning of mountains and in particular, the role, which mount Zion played in the cultic history of Israel. In the second part, the author analyses the etymological and morphological hypothesis of the semantic field of the root of the word Zion. The third part presents the conclusions of the archeological excavations connected with the mount Zion, which with the time, played not only geographical but symbolical role in the religious history of the chosen people, as well.
