At the point of departure the author analyzes some of the documents of Church’s social doctrine, which point at the theological foundations of this science. Specifically, it refers to the teaching of John Paul II, who clearly stated that the social teaching of the Church belongs to theology, especially moral theology (cf. SRS 41; CA 55). Seeking the biblico-theological foundations for the social teaching of the Church the author does not confine himself merely to pinpointing some aspects of the biblical science about social life, but shows a necessity to refer to the idea and reality of the New Covenant, thanks to which it is possible to fully read out the biblical social message. It is the author’s conviction that it is of critical importance in a specific theologization of the Church’s social doctrine to refer to an integral vision of man, and this ultimately means basing oneself on theological anthropology. To supplement this perspective is to grasp the Church’s social teaching in the context of the truth about the ecclesial dimension of Christian life and a call to evangelization, which encompasses all spheres of human life, that is also the sphere of social life.Pozycja Współczesne zagadnienia demograficzne i moralna ocena proponowanych rozwiązańNowosad, Sławomir (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 1995)The paper attempts to outline a demographic situation of today’s world together with numerous related issues like economic development, demographic growth, overpopulation, education, family planning, ecosphere, migration etc. The author then reviews the Christian teaching on the subject, both Catholic and Protestant. A special attention is paid to the draft final document of the 1994 UN International Conference on Population and Development and to the special letter by Pope John Paul II concerning these issues. It is pointed out that the roots of the problem are to be sought in the inequality of the distribution of wealth, in the expoiltation of poor nations by richer ones and in the insufficient education of people. It is not the number of people as such but the number of people not sufficiently educated and socially immature that create the biggest problems. The Catholic teaching on population issues emphasizes that any solutions to the problems must respect the human dignity and the rights of each human being, including of the unbom. So is it to respect the fundamental role of the family in every society. Contraception and abortion - as contrary to the dignity of man - cannot be accepted as means of population control. This document is imbedded in other pronouncement of John Paul II and may be read out as an expression of his concern about the lot of the man and the world, which more and more stubbornly gets stuck in a blind alley of the civilizational crisis threatening with a universal catastrophe. At the foundations of mankind’s being at a loss there lies a devaluation of ethical values deepened by the crisis of faith. In this context John Paul II "raises his hand" to the world in distress. In his teaching he is governed not so much by his personal conviction as by the historically founded experience based on the truth which is the Person of Jesus Christ, and which is brought near to man by the Holy Spirit acting in the Church and through the Church. Thus if this same Church seeks proper expressions received in the deposit of an ideal and it is this ideal that she wants to teach and she wants to lead man to it.
