    Komórki macierzyste: nadzieje i troski
Wróbel, Józef (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2003)
Stem cells are among the main objects of research and biological experiments at the moment. The discoveries that have already been made seem to anticipate a further qualitative breakthrough in medicine. The techniques based on stem cells entail, however, a number of ethical questions. They arouse not only hope but also concern, for they bring about a threat to man’s personal dignity and his life in the embryo stage. In his paper, the author first presents the biological problems of stem cells. In the second part he discusses the ethical aspects of the techniques based on those stems. In his analyses he clearly distinguishes between embryo stem cells and adult stem cells. The techniques based on adult stem cells are basically evaluated as positive. This evaluation, however, is not without any reservations. It demands that the same ethical principles be respected as in the case of organs transplantation. Now the techniques based on embryo stem cells are evaluated negatively. This evaluation results from the fact that in the majority of cases the techniques require the cloning of man and destruction of the human embryo.

Trzeci sektor a podstawowe zasady życia społecznego
Gocko, Jerzy (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2003)
The third sector is the general number of non-government non-profit organizations. Its specific character consists in the fact that it was born as a spontaneous reaction to the new forms of human poverty, social insufficiency and marginalization, to the inability (or lack of good will) on the part of the state to improve the situation. While seeking to define the nature and significance of the third sector, Christian ethicalsocial reflection regards as insufficient those approaches which are limited only to show its relation towards other sectors, especially the state and the market. It is much more important in this case to turn attention to the significance of the third sector as an important element in the formation of the basic relation of social life, that is the relationship between the individual and society. The present paper sought to show the third sector as the area of man’s socialization and depict his position in the relational social structure. Then it has been shown the relationship between the third sector and the basic social principles: the principles of personalism, subsidiarity, and solidarity.

    Trzecie tysiąclecie „nową wiosną” Kościoła
Jeżyna, Krzysztof (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2003)
The Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 was a special event in the history of the Church and is a powerful foundation for the hope connected with the perspective of the third millennium. This perspective of hope may be termed as the “new spring” of the Church. One should underline that the “new spring” of the Church is rather the programme which the Church is to carry out, not the statement of the actual state of affairs. The programme is expressed at the moment by the new evangelization whose essence is to preach “the Gospel which is always new and always bearing novelty” (VS 106). That Gospel is directed to the regeneration of both the Church and the world. The source of hope in social life is merciful love, one that forms “the imagination of mercy”, which enables to create a new civilization – the civilization of love, a civilization that corresponds to the personal dignity of man and his vocation to love.

    Media wobec spisku przeciwko życiu
Kieniewicz, Piotr H. (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2003)
Modern age is known as a “mass media era”, because of the role played by the media of social communication. Radio, press, television and – lately – Internet not only report happening facts, but also modify mood among the recipients, formatting them in accordance to the will of the broadcasters. It is clear then, that they can be a great asset in fight for life, but the damage created by misuse of them cannot be overrated. Author presents first the “conspiracy against the life”, as John Paul II shows it in his documents. Afterward, there are presented duties of mass media, to be followed by the discussion on the actual role, they are playing in social life, in faith for life especially. Mass media appear to be tied too closely with their financial supporters, not concerned with the moral value of published materials. They are also running too often after popularity of the recipients, forgetting their responsibility for the common good and the true good of the human person. Anyway, they can still be used as a tool in the process of the new evangelization, if people to be working in them are professionally and spiritually prepared.

    Franciszkańska teologia moralna (zarys problematyki)
Derdziuk, Andrzej (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2003)
The paper reflects on the role of Franciscans in the development of moral theology over the ages. It shows the contribution of Franciscan writers into the development of moral theology in Poland and points to the characteristic traits of the theology they pursued. By laying the foundation for a new religious family, St. Francis of Assisi stamped it with his Christocentric experience through the evangelical life in simplicity and poverty. Franciscan referred to the figure of their founder and wrote various works on theology. They were practical in nature and addressed to the students of religious schools and served as aids in the administration of the sacrament of penance. The handbooks took on various forms in respect of the period in which they were written. Basically, their authors based themselves on the accomplishments of the philosophy of St. Bonaventura and the BI. Duns Scotus, although there were also advocates of St. Thomas and authors who sought to present a synthesis of the great masters. Franciscans did not create their own theological school, but their handbooks were different than those written by other authors. A specific characteristic of the theology pursued in Franciscan orders was its faithfulness to St. Francis’ admonition to lecture about virtues and vices, therefore the treatise on aretology was made part of the handbooks. Generally, Franciscans were probabiliorists, although there happened to be advocates of other systems among them. The most prominent Franciscan moralists are as follows: A. Reiffenstuel, B. Elbel, P Sporer, Jacob of Corella, J. A. Hirsinger, Thomas of Charmes and K. Luydl and H. Jone.

Koncepcja sumienia w teologii ks. prof. Seweryna Rosika
Mroczkowski, Ireneusz (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2003)
The paper presents views on conscience held by one of Polish contemporary moral theologians, the Rev. S. Rosik. He combines faithfulness to the teaching of the Magisterium with an openness to the results of the contemporary sciences on man. It is especially interesting here to see the attempts to combine the results of psychological and sociological research with the personalistic foundation of conscience. The Rev. Rosik presents a coherent picture of conscience ion which faithfulness to truth is the most important criterion.

Chrześcijański sytuacjonizm etyczny? Próba Odpowiedzi księdza profesora Seweryna Rosika
Nagórny, Janusz (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2003)
The first anniversary of the death of the Reverend Professor Seweryn Rosik, who had worked for many years at the Section of Moral Theology of KUL, is an opportunity to reflect on his contribution to Polish moral theology. The paper depicts and evaluates a Christian interpretation of a moral situation as presented in his book Ethical Situationism versus Christian Prudence. A Study in Moral Theology (Poznan 1986, pp. 219). Following the structure of the book, the paper presents first a critical discussion of the radical ethical situationism, made by the Rev. Rosik. The point was to render such issue as: the foundation of situational ethics and its basic assumptions; the criterion of practical conscience in situation ethics; the criticism of the situation formation of conscience. Then he goes on to show the problem of the proper understanding of ethical situationism as it is rendered by the Rev. Rosik, i.e. in the so-called “prudential grasp” Thus he discusses also his analysis of prudence as intellectual, moral, and supernatural skill. This is given in order to consider the applicative function of this prudence in a proper rendition of an ethical situation with regard to moral principles. The paper stresses that the Christian interpretation of an ethical situation, as proposed by the Rev. Rosik, has taken on the form of a compact system which may be described as “Christian ethical situationism” This proposal is still current, although it should be read today in the light of the encyclical Veritatis splendor and all that has been added in the course of the following discussion in the milieu of moral theologians.

Teologickomorálna interpretácia koncepcie zodpovedného rodičovstva vo svetle učenia magistéria Cirkvi
Balák, René (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2003)
At the threshold of tertio millennio, signs of anti-civilization, which is not positively inclined towards life in the area of parenthood, may be observed, while these signa temporis represent a moral challenge for Christians. It is an issue of a moral activity of man called to a communion with God in the light of divine principles and norms, and man ought to freely apply them in the realm of responsible parenthood. From the point of view of moral theology, the anthropological understanding of the human person is introduced in the context of theology of creation, the incarnation and redemption, where the aspect of the New Covenant made by God with man presides. The moral category of responsibility illuminates the significance of actualization of the human freedom towards good, which is human life, thus, it shows respect for the dignity of the human person whom God calls to a responsible transmission of life. The content of the term responsible parenthood is presented in the spirit of the perspective of the gift of the self performed in the conjugal union of love which is open to procreation.

    Zarys dziejów duchowości anglikańskiej (I)
Nowosad, Sławomir (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2003)
This first part of the paper on Anglican spirituality covers its history and main trends before the Reformation. Christianity was present in England long before St Augustine but it is he who is regarded as the Apostle of England. The English spirituality has since been shaped by the Benedictine influence with its stress on the harmonized balance between prayer and labour. It was however St Anselm in whom “English spiritual theology is embodied and potentially formed” (M. Thornton). After him it was the 14th century when the English mysticism saw its remarkable development. Of the 14th century spiritual writers the following are outstanding: Richard Rolle, the anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing, Walter Hilton, Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe. What is common to their writings is that they all wrote as individuals to individuals; that English was the language they used; that they all wrote with directness and purpose; that their writings are some kind of personal testimony, they are not text-books. It is also worth mentioning the impact of the Celtic Christianity on English spirituality. The other part of the paper will present the development of English Anglican spirituality after the Reformation.

Rola sakramentu pokuty w formacji sumienia
Pokrywka, Marian (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2003)
Man finds and most profoundly confirms his identity by way of conscience. It is here that man not only discover who he is, but even more whom he should become according to God’s plan. In order for conscience to fulfil its role properly, it must constantly be formed in truth. To be summoned to the formation of conscience becomes now especially current because of the profound crisis of conscience. Now conscience can be falsified in many ways. Especially dangerous seems to be the neglect in the search after the full truth and sin to which one is accustomed, or even the loss of the sense of sin. One of the main reasons for such phenomena is the loss of the supernatural dimension of human life. In the reflection on Christian conscience, one points to many different routes of its formation. The present study pinpoints that the formation of conscience is inseparably linked with the process of constant conversion to truth and good. Ultimately, it is conversion to Christ who is the Truth and teaches us what is good. In the process of conversion, therefore the process of conscience formation, the sacrament of penance plays a special role. The paper describes the acts of the penitent that enable him to take a responsible part in this sacrament. They are as follows: contrition for one’s sins as it stems out of a proper examination of conscience and the resolution to make satisfaction to God, confession of sins and satisfaction. From the perspective of the sacrament of penance, it has been stressed that the formation of Christian conscience should be a turning to the future. This positive program of life stems out of faith in the ultimate victory of love which, while being the gift of God, is greater that any evil of the world.
