Pozycja Peter Neuner and Paul M. Zulehner. Zrozumieć Kościół. Eklezjologia praktyczna. Poznań: Wydawnictwo Św. Wojciech, 2016, pp. 287.Śmigiel, Wiesław (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2017)Pozycja Merciful Like the Father ‒ the Vision of Pastoral Care in the ParishŚmigiel, Wiesław (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2017)Sacred Scripture provides indications of how to channel pastoral care in the parish so that pastors and lay evangelizers will be merciful like the Father. The Merciful God is presented in the Parable of the Lost Sheep, the Parable of the Lost Drachma and the Parable of the Prodigal Son. Pope Francis in Misericordiae Vultus observes that in these parables we discover “the core of the Gospel and of our faith, because mercy is presented as a force that overcomes everything, filling the heart with love and bringing consolation through pardon” (MV, 9). God is portrayed as the Merciful Father searching for those who have left the community of the faithful or got lost in the Church. This image is a foundation for creating a pastoral vision for the parish. From this perspective mercy does not apply only to the charity practices but becomes evangelisation which opens for a personal meeting with Jesus Christ in the Gospel, liturgy, sacraments and the community. From these parables the “imagination of mercy” is born, the imagination which should permeate the parish and indicate the style of pastoral care. The realisation of mercy consists in going to the peripheries of the parish in order to search for those who have left or got lost (cf. NMI, 50). The new “imagination of mercy” encourages us to use the law of gradualness in pastoral care (cf. EG, 34-39; AL, 293-295) and the strategy of facilitation (cf. EG, 44).Pozycja The Dialogue of Believers in God with Non-Believers: the Challenge Facing the Catholic Church in the New CenturySakowicz, Eugeniusz (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2017)The Catholic Church in Poland faces various difficult challenges. One of them is the dialogue with people who declare their lack of faith in God. Modern atheism in Polish society is largely a consequence of the persecution of religion conducted for decades by the institutions of the Polish communist state. Current secular tendencies also have a significant impact. The phenomenon of the lack of faith is a challenge that necessitates new forms of pastoral work. The Church takes certain actions inspired, for example, by a document published by the Polish Episcopal Conference Council for Religious Dialogue in 2003, entitled “Dialogue: a Challenge for the New Century.” Part of the document refers specifically to “dialogue with non-believers.” Papal documents on atheism and non-believers provide guidance to priests and lay members of the Church. The Magisterium Ecclesiae has generated several practical recommendations for pastoral work. What is needed is a matter-of-fact, objective description of atheism and the lack of faith. It is necessary to initiate dialogue with non-believers at the doctrinal level, by listening carefully to their views; and at the practical level, by taking actions for the common good. The dialogue should be aimed at achieving a better knowledge of the other party, i.e. understanding the articles of faith on the one hand and, on the other, the theses and rationale behind the lack of faith. Only credible witnesses to the faith in God, those who believe by their own personal choice and conviction, can guide non-believers to the truth about God, Jesus Christ and human beings. The dialogue with non-believers is difficult due to strong non-rational prejudice, e.g. emotional bias, trauma, resentment and aggressive media propaganda against religion. However, one should not give up attempts at dialogue and communication. The imperative of the dialogue stems from Jesus Christ, Son of God who, by assuming human nature, entered the state of dialogue with every human being, both believers and non-believers.Pozycja Accompanying Young Spouses in the Initial Years of MarriagePyźlak, Grzegorz (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2017)The release of the apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia revealed the need in the universal Church to accompany spouses in the initial years of marriage. The First Instruction of the Polish Episcopate for the Clergy on Preparation of the Faithful for the Sacrament of Marriage and on Pastoral Care of the Family introduced in Poland in the late sixties highlighted the fact that leaving young spouses alone in the initial stage of their life in marriage is disadvantageous. Therefore, Christian community should gain profound knowledge of the difficulties faced by young spouses in order to provide them with proper aid. St. John Paul II also highlighted the need to accompany young spouses in his apostolic exhortation Familiaris Consortio (cf. FC, 65). Pope Francis, concerned about the irresponsible attitude of fiancés towards contracting sacramental marriage, teaches in his apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia that “the initial years of marriage are a vital and sensitive period during which couples become more aware of the challenges and meaning of married life” (AL, 223). The Pope higlights the greatest opportunity of help in accompanying young spouses after the celebration of the sacrament of marriage. He encourages pastoral workers to assist young couples in order to help them complete the unfinished process of becoming mature in order to face the responsibility to contract sacramental marriage. The author of the article attempts to explain what accompanying is, what issues should be discussed during meetings with the spouses in the initial years of marriage and what subjects should actively participate in assissting young spouses.Pozycja Models of Salvific Activity of the Church. The State of Research and Future PerspectivesPrzygoda, Wiesław (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2017)The main objective of pastoral theologians is to develop theologically accurate and practically effective models of salvific activity of the Church, known as pastoral care. A pastoral model is a simplified, descriptive, graphical reflection of the whole or a part of the complex salvific activity of the Church, embracing both a normative and practical element of the activity, which makes it possible to analyze and evaluate it, as well as to offer some predictions for the future (N. Hepp). The aim of this article is to present the state of research concerning the current models of salvific activity of the Church within the scope of pastoral theology and to direct us towards a need to develop new models that will take the socio-cultural context into account. Nowadays, we can talk of three such models that have been scientifically discussed on a global scale (the human-divine model by F. X. Arnold, the community model by F. Klostermann, and the preferential option for the poor). It seems, then, that there is a space for a new model of salvific activity of the Church, centered on the principle of love, or alternatively, the model of dialogue.Pozycja The Cognitive Aspect of Upbringing to Love in the Actions of the Families’ Ministry for Marriage and FamilyParysiewicz, Beata M. (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2017)The article addresses the issue of the doctrinal aspect of the activities of the families’ ministry in the field of teaching about love as a foundation of the Catholic marriage and family. It analyses the question of defining Christian love, its meaning for the proper structure of marriage and family and the correct fulfilment of their tasks. It also points to the links between the correct understanding of love and faith, calling, and salvation. The article also presents the order of love as a foundation of Christian marital and family life and the consequences of breaking that order.Pozycja The Parish Pastoral Care and the ImmigrantsLipiec, Dariusz (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2017)According to the Department of Foreign Affairs more and more people come to Poland in order to settle here. Although Poland is considered to be one of the least attractive countries in the European Union for incomers, many of them marry Polish citizens, find a job, study or start their own business in Poland. Such people live in big cities as well as in towns, becoming the members of local communities. Some of them are Catholics of various denominations, others are Christians from other Churches, some are non-believers or remain indifferent to any religion. They all, however, constitute a challenge for pastoral care of the family which aims at bringing them closer to Christ. Parish pastoral care priests, as it is indicated in the teaching of the Church, can undertake various initiatives according to the religious or denominational affiliation of the immigrants and their needs. The forms of assistance of pastoral care priests involve satisfying spiritual, psychological and material needs of incomers. However, the main aim of pastoral care is to integrate the newcomers with the local community.Pozycja The Renewal of Pastoral Care of the Family in the Light of the Apostolic Exhortation "Amoris laetitia"Goleń, Jacek (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2017)The aspirations of Pope Francis for the renewal of pastoral care of the family are based on the deeply theologically rooted principles of the Church’s proper role. In the exhortation Amoris Laetitia, the principle of God’s grace, the principle of pastoral love, the paschal principle of sacrifice and the principle of the Church’s missionary activity are all clearly visible. In the document, we can also find a few directions for the renewal of the pastoral care of the family. The strengthening of the focus of the parish as well as the strengthening of the focus of spouses and the domestic Church on pastoral care of the family are crucial. Further on, we find encouragement for the renewal of the preparation for marriage within the ecclesial community, and for the development and strengthening of the pastoral care of married couples. The Pope sees the care for those in irregular situations as an extension of the pastoral care of engaged and married couples. Consequently, for the realization of the desired directions in the development and renewal of pastoral care of the family, it is necessary to expand and deepen the formation of seminarians and priests for their pastoral work with engaged persons, married couples and families.Pozycja Protection of the Work of Creation. Ecology in the Teachings of Benedict XVIFiałkowski, Marek (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2017)The Church after the Second Vatican Council joined the discussion concerning natural environment, treating ecological issues as a sign of the times. The teachings of Benedict XVI concerning ecology fit the teaching of the Church after the Second Vatican Council, continuing and developing some of its elements and pointing towards new perspectives. This articles aims at addressing key ecological issues presented in the teachings of the Pope, focusing on three areas: ecology of man, ecology of the family and ecology of peace. Benedict XVI combines the issues of the protection of nature with humanity and its condition, and with the need to build good social relations vital for both keeping the balance between people and maintaining and protecting peace.Pozycja Catechetical Dimension of the Homily against the Background of the Homiletic Directory. Selected AspectsChmielewski, Mirosław (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2017)The article ponders upon the catechetical dimension of the homily in light of the instruction contained in the Homiletic Directory published in 2014. This document finds that the homily is not catechetical preaching, but that doctrinal and moral catechesis constitutes its essential dimension. In the opening section, the author discusses the Catechism of the Catholic Church as a source of inspiration for homiletics and homilies. The second section outlines some selected theological paradigms contained in the Catechism that should be employed in liturgical proclamation. The closing section examines a proposal of the authors of the Homiletic Directory to use the content of the Catechism of the Catholic Church in homiletic proclamation. The final section closes with the author’s conclusion and recommendation that the doctrinal and moral content in homilies and catechesis be seen primarily as having the role of the formation of the faithful, and not only as informative and communicating theological knowledge.Pozycja Focusing on the Basic Elements of Christian Faith in the Service of Renewal. The Scope and Effects of the Encyclical "Deus caritas est" More Than Ten Years after Its PublicationBaumann, Klaus (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2017)This paper is an attempt to outline the scope and effects of Pope Benedict XVI’s first encyclical Deus Caritas Est more than ten years after its publication in January 2006. It depicts the context of this encyclical within the papal Magisterium since Vatican II and the scope of this document as a call for the Church to readjust Herself according to the hierarchy of truths and to focus on the basic elements of Christian faith in order to renew Herself in Her mission in the service of love. In order to achieve more of the desired effects of both Pope Benedict’s and Pope Francis’ pastoral Magisterium for the renewal of the Church and also of theology, the theological curriculum needs to integrate Caritas Science as a theological discipline which studies this essential dimension of the Church from both theological and interdisciplinary perspectives.
