Sexual Violence Against a Child in the Social Service Workers’ Views. Commentary to the Studies
Dworakowska, Joanna (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2016)
For the full and harmonious development of their personality children should grow up in a family environment in an atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding. In many families, children are not provided with fundamental rights and fulfillment of their needs: safety, love, acceptance, and respect. Their sense of dignity collapses, they are prohibited from revealing emotions and thoughts. All this triggers a sense of shame, anger and fear, which are often passed on to the child’s functioning in different environments. The phenomenon of violence against children in the family – care deprivation, negligence of their emotionality as well as of bringing up, physical and mental harm, beatings, abuse, and sexual abuse are not uncommon. The issue of various types of child abuse, its recognition, intervention as well as prevention, and helping those children is a concern and a great challenge not only for teachers, educators, psychologists, therapists, but for the whole society, too. In the first part of the considerations theoretical framework for difficult issues posed by sexual violence against children has been presented. An attempt at defining the problem has been presented: a form of sexual abuse, signals that may indicate that the child was the object of sexual violence and direct and long-term consequences of sexual violence against a child. In the second part, in a form of commentary the results of the author’s own research regarding the various categories of respondents, who are employees of the social services on sexual violence against a child have been thoroughly analyzed.

The Role of Guidance in Increasing Human and Social Capital
Gagacka, Maria (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2016)
The consequence of the dynamically ongoing changes is a growing area of uncertainty and social risks. Inability to cope with the permanently occurring uncertainty on the one hand leads to several negative consequences, such as a sense of alienation, meaninglessness, or helplessness, and on the other – increases the need for development of powers to plan one’s own career path or to cope with new challenges. The demand for counseling is not only in individuals who want to quickly and effectively develop their own careers, but also in individuals that fall out of the mainstream, and are not able to function in the realities of today’s labour markets or to fulfil their professional and family roles. The paper presents an analysis of the role of guidance, resulting from the implementation of modern paradigms of social policy (anticipatory, investment, activating), and biographical and emancipation counselling models in increasing human and social capital.

    Social Rehabilitation through the Education
Jęczeń, Jarosław (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2016)
The main issue related to social rehabilitation is its effectiveness. Is it possible to bridge the gulf that exists between a prisoner in custody and people who enjoy freedom? Are they alike? Or are they so very much different that social rehabilitation is impossible? There is a whole array of questions and answers. Most opinions hold that social rehabilitation is not possible. The author of the article suggests that a positive answer to these questions will only be possible when we reach for the concept of man and discover the truth that inmates and people outside corrective institutions are exactly the same. Thus our elementary task is to discover the truth about the excluded as well as to help the excluded discover the same truth. This discovery is attained through learning, i.e. education.

Training Systems in Terms of Qualifications and Competencies of Social Workers in the Selected European Countries
Koperek, Jerzy (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2016)
Training of social workers, based on Polish and EU standards of education, aims at their acquiring professional qualifications and competences. It also aims at the development of the profession in order to cope with the social challenges of the modern society. The analysed issue of the European training system of social workers is presented in the context of the legal regulations in selected European countries. In this context, it is worthwhile to learn the basic qualifications and competences of social workers obtained in the course of education in selected European countries. The presented study examines this issue with regard to Polish standards. There is a need on the one hand of the implementation of the UE legislation to Polish legislation, but on the other hand, every state has the right to apply its own solutions to the education of social workers, defining qualification standards of the profession. There is therefore a need for updating and developing educational standards in preparation for practicing the profession of social worker in Poland, using the standards of the EU, EU Member States and European states outside the EU. The article draws attention to these considerations, and tries to present these standards in the context of European and national educational standards.

A Characterization of Streetworkers’ Work and Work Environment Based on a Study Carried Out on a Particular Group of Streetworkers
Łukasiewicz, Roland (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2016)
When helping another person we usually focus on what kind of help we offer and who we help. We often don’t pay attention to the person who offers help. The goal of this summary is to talk about that person – to show, who the volunteer is, in a specific context of street work with homeless people. This article shows not only who streetworkers are, but it also shows their work ethics and their attitude towards the people they help. The research that has been done omits detailed stat analysis in order to focus full attention to parameters and indicators of this particular social study. Because of this process we manage to obtain a vivid and true image of a streetworker‘s agenda.

Sharing Psychological Tests with Non-Psychologists – Ethical and Professional Aspects
Oronowicz, Wojciech (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2016)
The problem of sharing psychological tests with non-psychologists concerns the sharing of chosen psychological tools with people without full psychological education. An analysis of the principles of sharing psychological tests was attempted. The Workgroup of Psychological Tests of The Polish Psychological Association (Pracownia Testów Psychologicznych Polskiego Towarzystwa Psychologicznego) makes psychological tools available in 4 categories, each of which includes various psychological tests. The issues of concern are the platform “Epsilon,” which has been recently introduced by The Workgroup of Psychological Tests, a training program, which is supposed to endorse the basics of psychometrics, or the possibility to access psychological tests from the category “for psychologists only,” given to people with a “doctor of psychology” degree. It is necessary to discuss the subject of the use of psychological tests by people without adequate psychological education. Easy access to the tests by non-psychologists can be harmful to the prestige of the psychological profession.

Symbolic Violence within the Work of Counseling Institutions – the Paradox of Counseling
Skałbania, Barbara; Gretkowski, Andrzej (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2016)
Counseling and helping are generally associated with honorable actions, aimed at the benefit of another person. People take these actions because of individual reasons or taking into account the social and professional role one performs. It is done by interpersonal interaction or within the frames of particular institution. The latter is meant by arranged actions. The aim of this article is to present another dimension of giving help by means of institutions. The presence of symbolic violence related to power is present in the dimension. According to Michel Foucault “the one who was put within the range of perception and realizes that, accepts the limits enforced on them by power.” As the author continues, everybody is placed in the field of power, despite the fact that one does not always realize that. Our deliberations, related to the presence of symbolic violence and its meaning in the process of helping are based on the definition of violence coined by Pierre Bourdieu. The deliberations refer to the way psychological and pedagogical counseling centers work. The violence is a part of the secret scheme of the institution. The authors try to uncover and reveal it with the view to make people think and realize its existence. The hidden dimension embraces what is not visible but palpable, what is meant straightaway but has its place in the course of actions taken by the assisting team and the institutions, what is included in the formal “between” and in hidden actions and which is not realized by people who use the services of psychological and pedagogical counseling centers.

Conditions, Standard and Quality of Life in a Study of Socio-Economic Development. An Attempt to Resolve the Problems of Definition
Zadroga, Adam (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2016)
In the last 30-40 years there has been an increased interest in research on socio-economic changes. Thus, there has been a shift away from measuring only the material dimension of development. Researchers started using categories such as: consumption, standard of living, level of living, economic welfare, wealth, living conditions, quality of life, a way of life, lifestyle, etc. The problem that we face in quite extensive literature is the lack of application of a uniform terminology. Attempts to define these categories should be regarded as not fully satisfactory because they do not allow the adoption of clear solutions. We can only point out some proposals that include many significant features conducive to the study of the social dimension of the economic transition. This article attempts to resolve problems of the definitions of three basic categories related to the study of socio-economic changes, which are: conditions of life, standard of living and quality of life.
