Nawiedzenie kopii Obrazu Matki Bożej Jasnogórskiej w archidiecezji gnieźnieńskiej w latach 1978–1979. Studium historyczno-pastoralne
Zmuda, Wenancjusz (Prymasowski Instytut Kultury Chrześcijańskiej im. Stefana Kard. Wyszyńskiego w Bydgoszczy, 2017)
The article is a historical and pastoral study of the peregrination of the Icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa in the Archdiocese of Gniezno in 1978–1979. The paper attempts to demonstrate and assess the peregrination, which was held from 21 May 1978 to 24 June 1979 and had a significant impact on the local church forty years ago, specifically the city of Bydgoszcz and the present-day shape of the Diocese of Bydgoszcz. The importance of studying this historical event is further stressed by the fact that the Diocese of Bydgoszcz will bear witness to another peregrination from 01 September 2018 to 06 April 2019. The peregrination of the Icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa is an event that requires constant and profound consideration from theological and pastoral perspectives, so a historical study may prove helpful in this respect.

Dar miłości od Boga-Ojca przez Jezusa Chrystusa w Duchu Świętym według Rz 5, 1–11
Walak, Sebastian (Prymasowski Instytut Kultury Chrześcijańskiej im. Stefana Kard. Wyszyńskiego w Bydgoszczy, 2017)
The purpose of this article is to present the meaning of the term ἀγάπη (love) in Rom 5:1–11. A rhetorical study is provided here to stress the structural unity and importance of this pericope as a summary of Rom 1:18–4:25 and an introduction to Rom 5:1–8:39. With the help of a semantic and lexical analysis, a further section of the article attempts to demonstrate that love is given to man by God the Father through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit. It is noteworthy that the gift of love from the Triune God can be received by faith and supported by hope. It was God the Father’s love revealed through the death of Jesus Christ and the activities of the Holy Spirit that formed the basis for St Paul’s explanation of free justification by faith (Rom 1:16–17) in his Epistle to the Romans. Here, the Apostle emphasized the highest dimension of love that man can experience with the help of the noun ἀγάπη. This is confirmed by the use of significant semantic fields in Rom 5:1–11, namely Triune God (with terms such as θεός = God, κύριος = Lord, Ἰησοῦς = Jesus, Χριστός = Christ, υἱός = Son, πνεῦμα ἅγιον = Holy Spirit), gift (with words like δίδωμι = give, χάρις = grace), love (ἀγάπη), faith (πίστις) and hope (ἐλπίς), which in turn are reflected throughout the entire Epistle to the Romans.

Krzyż mi jest tarczą, a zbawienie łupem – Marek Jandowicz O. Carm. (1713–1799)
Strzelecki, Wiesław (Prymasowski Instytut Kultury Chrześcijańskiej im. Stefana Kard. Wyszyńskiego w Bydgoszczy, 2017)
The article presents a portrait of Father Marek Jandowicz (1713–1799), a Carmelite monk and the spiritual leader of the famous Bar Confederation. In operation from 1768–1772, this was an armed association of Polish nobles established at the fortress of Bar in Podolia on 29 February 1768. Father Jandowicz’s literary output includes numerous letters, writings and instructions. He is traditionally regarded as the author of several prayers for Bar Confederates, the most important of which is the rhymed prophetic poem Wieszczba dla Polski (Prophecy for Poland) also known as Proroctwa ks. Marka (Father Marek’s Predictions). As well as those, the Carmelite monk also wrote over a dozen letters and blessings, which originated after 1777.

Polowanie na zwierzęta w świetle podstawowych zasad teologii moralnej
Smykowski, Krzysztof (Prymasowski Instytut Kultury Chrześcijańskiej im. Stefana Kard. Wyszyńskiego w Bydgoszczy, 2017)
The article attempts to provide an ethical assessment of game hunting, an activity which arouses conflicting emotions in public debate. Thus, it seems essential that the issue be submitted for scientific consideration based on ethics and moral theology. In the light of its principles, hunting itself does not constitute human misconduct against animals and is indeed a manner of exercising the mandate of the world’s supervisor entrusted to man by the Creator. Nonetheless, it is imperative to emphasise that hunting should be justified by a reasonable cause such as the desire to satisfy an existential need or sustain balance in the ecosystem. Moreover, hunters ought to ensure that the suffering of wild game is significantly reduced. All this can be accomplished by the strict observance of the rules applicable to the organisation and implementation of hunting activities.

Uwagi o prowincjałach karmelitańskiej Wielkopolskiej Prowincji Najświętszego Sakramentu w XVIII w.
Puziak, Marcin (Prymasowski Instytut Kultury Chrześcijańskiej im. Stefana Kard. Wyszyńskiego w Bydgoszczy, 2017)
The article is focused on the provincial superiors of the Carmelite Province of the Blessed Sacrament (Carmelites of Ancient Observance), which is based in the Wielkopolska region and was established in 1728 as a result of separating those monasteries which had adopted the so-called Touraine reform (strictior observantia) and until then had formed part of a vicariate controlled by the Provincial Superior of Poland. The history of the province, which can be divided into three periods: establishment (up to 1728), growth (1728–1799) and decline leading to dissolution (up to 1863 or 1918, depending on the canonical interpretation), is little known and requires a profound study. Part of that is the history of its superiors, whose brief descriptions are presented here. General remarks concern the method of selection and interpretation of data from the province’s chapter records. This also applies to numerical data from provincial superior elections. The attempt to sort out biographical data concerning individual provincials is complemented with general remarks on this group of monks and their position in the province. However, the reader may be more interested in a more general interpretation of the relations between individual superiors (and the province) and state authorities and social elites of the regions of Wielkopolska, Pomorze, Ziemia Dobrzyńska and Mazowsze; a task impossible to conduct at this stage of research.

Nowa ewangelizacja jako odpowiedź na kryzys współczesnej kultury w nauczaniu Jana Pawła II
Poćwiardowski, Piotr (Prymasowski Instytut Kultury Chrześcijańskiej im. Stefana Kard. Wyszyńskiego w Bydgoszczy, 2017)
John Paul II taught us that the goal of the New Evangelization is to build a civilization of love and solidarity, and also to renew the Church. This task can be achieved through dialogue between the Gospel and culture with the participation of all Christians. The mission of evangelization with new enthusiasm requires deep faith, heartfelt love and fidelity. Only then, with assistance from the Holy Spirit, can a true desire to proclaim the Gospel emerge. A new era demands new languages and media understandable to contemporary people so that the truths of the Christian faith can be taught effectively. Thus, the New Evangelization should provide coherent, accurate and convincing answers to the questions of the modern world; ones that could strengthen the Catholic faith with its basic truths in individuals, families and communities.

We live in a world where supernatural experiences attract considerable attention. Curiosity and hunger for miracles, also among people of deep faith, sometimes take a pathological form. Therefore, the article strives to demonstrate the proper understanding of a miracle as differing from what today’s world regards as miracles in its tendency to seek wonders. The author stresses the need to verify extraordinary events and reveals their proper meaning in the life of a contemporary Christian.

    Zagadnienie etapów lectio divina
Perlik, Dawid (Prymasowski Instytut Kultury Chrześcijańskiej im. Stefana Kard. Wyszyńskiego w Bydgoszczy, 2017)
The centuries-long practice of prayerful reading of the Holy Scriptures, known as Lectio divina, is typically divided into stages. As we now know, there is a distinction between the classical division and the new approaches. Shaped by the Carthusian monk Guigo II, the classical form is made up of four consecutive steps: lectio, meditatio, oratio, contemplatio, which demonstrates that lectio divina is a method of prayer aimed at promoting communion with God through contemplation. On the other hand, the so-called “new” stages, which go beyond the four-part arrangement, much better indicate the specific lifestyle chosen by the person practising lectio divina. In this lifestyle, there is a specific action inspired by the holy text. The new division contains steps such as collatio (sharing), consolatio (consolation), discretio (cognition, edification), deliberatio (choice), conversio (conversion), testificatio (testimony to a previous conversion experience) and actio (choices based on vocation). Thus it is clear that prayer reading stages are diversified and those who discuss them pay attention to different aspects. This does not change the fact, however, that the desire to encounter God is one of the most fundamental human needs, and lectio divina provides a good opportunity to achieve this goal, as demonstrated by the dynamic development of groups that have selected lectio divina as their path of spiritual growth.

Droga do „Summorum Pontificum”. Kolejne regulacje Kościoła w zakresie dostępu do tradycyjnych obrzędów liturgicznych rytu rzymskiego w świetle oceny teologicznej i filozoficznej
Mielnik, Dawid (Prymasowski Instytut Kultury Chrześcijańskiej im. Stefana Kard. Wyszyńskiego w Bydgoszczy, 2017)
The paper attempts to reconstruct access conditions for the traditional liturgy of the Roman Rite against a background of subsequent documents that specify the circumstances in which the unreformed Holy Mass may be celebrated. The article offers an assessment of three most important documents that set out the principles and conditions for the celebration of the traditional liturgy: Summorum Pontificum, Quattuor Abhinc Annos and Ecclesia Dei. As the study demonstrates, access to the unreformed Holy Mass rite was gradually extended and facilitated though the motu proprio Ecclesia Dei introduced no serious changes in this respect. However, even Benedict XVI’s document did not grant the faithful complete access to the entire liturgical tradition of the Roman Catholic Church as there are still certain customs and ceremonies that cannot be preserved and celebrated under the present regulations.

In Poland there is a recurrent discussion on the possibility and principles of using contraceptives. Some claim such a possibility directly results from respect for the patient’s rights. Others maintain that a false approach as contraceptive agents do not bring therapeutic effects so they cannot be regarded as medications. Every now and then the Polish media return to the issue for another reason. Reportedly, doctors are increasingly often restricting their female patients access to contraceptive measures by invoking their conscience clause rights. Should the patient have a right to contraception then? Perhaps the opposite is true: contraception violates the patient’s rights? Can the doctor refuse a prescription for such agents? Does the doctor have a right to invoke the conscience clause then? Perhaps all of his or her actions should result from medical competence only? The article offers an attempt to answer those questions. It is based on a case presented by the Polish media in the middle of 2017.

Daj mi tej wody, abym nie pragnęła... (J 4, 15). Człowiek jako rzeczywistość epikletyczna
Kiejkowski, Paweł (Prymasowski Instytut Kultury Chrześcijańskiej im. Stefana Kard. Wyszyńskiego w Bydgoszczy, 2017)
Man is an epicletic entity. This reality is to be understood in a multidimensional and analogous manner. He realizes himself by invoking God, the name of Jesus Christ and in particular the Holy Spirit, but also by calling for the presence of another person. But man is also a pneumatophoric being, that is the carrier of the Holy Spirit. The epicletic character is present in the entire dimension of human existence. This ultimately means calling for acceptance, survival and fulfillment; summoning sense, good, truth, beauty and the fullness of life; requesting assistance in the process of humanizing the world; and longing for the presence of another person. These are the words of an existential prayer instituted and supported by the Holy Spirit. This truth is demonstrated in the biblical texts that mention “the creation’s groans” and the thirsty Samaritan woman, in the epicletic experiences of certain primitive religions as well as in the lives and teachings of Christian mystics. A unique reflection of this reality is the Mother of God, who Eastern Orthodox theology refers to as the Carrier of the Spirit (Pneumatophora, Duchonósica).

Gogolik, Mirosław (Prymasowski Instytut Kultury Chrześcijańskiej im. Stefana Kard. Wyszyńskiego w Bydgoszczy, 2017)
With regard to the current pace of life and the dynamically changing structures and models of social life, a need arises for new programs in pastoral theology and catechetical education based on work with young people so that they can satisfy their religious requirements and expectations, and thus effectively accomplish the goal of catechetical instruction, which is to attain an intimate relationship with Christ. Responsible teaching and the cooperation of all those involved in providing religious education in the parish, conducted in the spirit of dialogue and magnanimity, may bear fruit in the adult life of the student. The article discusses the practice of preparing candidates for the sacrament of confirmation in view of the evolving law and the current guidelines of the Polish Episcopate Conference. The study also contains opinions and observations from religious instruction teachers on the preparation period, the age of sacrament reception and the organizational forms of catechetical instruction addressed at those to receive confirmation.

Europa chrześcijańska czy świecka? Historia i współczesność
Czyżewski, Bogdan (Prymasowski Instytut Kultury Chrześcijańskiej im. Stefana Kard. Wyszyńskiego w Bydgoszczy, 2017)
At present, there is an evident clash between two strong views on Europe, especially its history and future. One, upheld first and foremost by the Church, supports the claim that Europe has traditionally been Christian and should remain so; a viewpoint given much prominence to specifically before Poland joined the European Union. On the other hand, this claim encounters considerable resistance or indifference from those who call themselves “genuine progressive Europeans” and who want a truly secular Europe separated from the church and faith. Some within this group admit that Europe was built on Christian foundations, but they would rather live in a continent devoid of God and of all that He offers to us. The article attempts to answer the question whether Europe is Christian or secular. To achieve this, the first part of the study deals with the Roman Empire and its subsequent history. The analysis clearly demonstrates that Europe is rooted in Christianity. The second part presents the history of three rulers who had a significant influence on the development of Europe and linked it with Christianity: Clovis I, King of the Franks; Charlemagne; and Mieszko I, Duke of the Polans. This section also offers an insight into the contribution of Christianity to Europe. The final part provides examples of the departure from the true ideas of the founding fathers of the European Union. There is a growing tendency to forget, or even lie about the fact, that Christianity has always had a considerable impact on the development of Europe. Increasingly often we can hear opinions that Europe should distance itself from Christianity and become a truly secular community with no respect to and recognition of its Christian roots.

Ostre „biada” Jakuba pod adresem bogaczy (Jk 5, 1–6)
Ćwikła, Jarosław (Prymasowski Instytut Kultury Chrześcijańskiej im. Stefana Kard. Wyszyńskiego w Bydgoszczy, 2017)
The motif of wealth runs through the entire Holy Scriptures with less or more intensity. In the Old Testament the issue was referred to mainly by the Prophets and the authors of the wisdom books, whereas in the New Testament by Jesus’ disciples, specifically Luke and James. Although Luke is widely perceived as the critic of the rich and the protector of the poor, James also deserves the title. Why? Because in his Book he also included a number of critical references to wealthy people along with uplifting remarks addressed at the poor. In his short Epistle, composed of 5 chapters only, James says: It is right that the brother in humble circumstances should glory in being lifted up, and the rich in being brought low. For the rich will last no longer than the wild flower; (Jas 1: 9–10). The scorching sun comes up, and the grass withers, its flower falls, its beauty is lost. It is the same with the rich: in the middle of a busy life, the rich will wither. (Jas 1: 11). Here is another quote: God chose the poor people of this world to be rich in the faith and to possess the kingdom which he promised to those who love him. But you dishonour the poor (Jas 2: 5–6a). Who are the ones who oppress you and drag you before the judges? The rich! They are the ones who speak evil of that good name which has been given to you (Jas 2: 6b–7). In his Epistle, James not only recorded individual critical remarks towards the rich and uplifting references to the poor, but also included an entire pericope dedicated to the issue, namely the passage about greedy and merciless people of wealth (Jas 5: 1–6). The fragment is a sharp rebuke directed to the wealthy. It contains a warning that the punishment for them and for their social sins will be worldly afflictions first and eternal damnation later. Therefore, it has an educational value. This article offers an analysis of the passage. For the sake of clarity, the paper is divided into four parts. The first discusses historical issues, the second – literary ones, the third – semantic ones, and the fourth – theological aspects.
