Z historii działalności charytatywno-dobroczynnej w Łodzi w okresie międzywojennym

Abstract

The charitably philanthropic work of Lodzki Church has one’s own rich tradition reaching second half of 19th century and is connected with the person of priest Ludwik Dąbrowski – the first ordinary of Lodz diocese established in the year 1920. Activities of the Church in this field entered with golden syllables the history of industrial Lodz, especially during the First World War First, and later in years of the great economic crisis. From the beginning of existence of Diocese the charitably philanthropic work of the Church was developed in four principle forms and was driven by associations and charitable organizations, orders, parish charitable points „Caritas” and by immediate charitable action in cooperation with the laic charitable organizations. From the church organizations in the most vital way acted established by the bishop Tymieniecki in the year 1931 the Committee Mayday for the Poorest under the name „Immediate Meal” Already in the year 1932 it had at its own disposal 15 kitchens, which daily gave over 6 thousand of meals. In order to unify and stimulate the charitable action, the Committee of Charitable Unions „Caritas” was appointed to live from the initiative of another lodzki ordinary Włodzimierz Jasiński in April 1936. It was composed of the following charitable companionships: Immediate Meal, Committee of Summer Camps, Central Committee „Caritas”, parish departments „Caritas” The committee had also in view keeping contact with the state institutions responsible for social welfare and wholesome, moreover conquering of material subsidies for charitable aims. The explosion of Second World War put the end of the charitably philanthropic action driven.
